DCS Hornet next steps, 10-things about DCS World, FC3 content refresh

While the F-14 Tomcat is soaking up most of the attention for DCS World fans right now, it’s not the only thing happening right now and Eagle Dynamics has released some news about the Hornet, Flaming Cliffs 3 content updates, and a cool new video with the Top 10 Things to Know About DCS World.

Top 10 things you should know

This video isn’t really meant for fans that are already in-depth on the DCS World experience, however, you may want to share this with your friends if you wanted to show them a little more about the series in a fairly short video. It’s smart marketing especially with the F-14 Tomcat getting lots of attention not just among the flight sim fans but also appearing in various PC game related media.

Next steps on the DCS: F/A-18C Hornet

The next open beta updates are going to bring with them some new features while the most recent open beta was focused on providing fixes. Matt Wagner reports that the team is working on bringing some important new features to the Hornet including Latent Track While Scan (LTWS) mode for the radar and the mighty JDAM series of munitions:

For the next OB update the focus will be on:

1- HARM Pre-Briefed mode
2- JDAM
3- Aircraft and Mission cards
4- Latent Track While Scan (LTWS) mode

There are a number of issues that will also get attention to include:

Countermeasure programming with WOW and flare counts
Master Mode auto-page selections
Default bombing mode error
AACQ logic
Map orientation
and others…

Please understand that these are the priorities and not a promise that all of these items will be ready for the 27 March OB.

As the months roll past, Eagle Dynamics keeps pushing forward towards a complete DCS: F/A-18C Hornet module. Already incredible capable, the Hornet just keeps pressing forward at a steady rate. Hopefully in the next couple of months we’ll see the targeting pod make progress and we’ll get the ability to self lase targets.

Flaming Cliffs 3 content update

Eagle Dynamics has announced that all of the Flaming Cliffs 3 Instant Action and Single Missions have received a thorough refresh. This is long past due and a very welcome addition as I’ve noted a number of these missions just do not work in DCS World 2.5 – that is apparently now being corrected.

Efforts are also underway to improve the Campaigns that shipped with Flaming Cliffs 3. Here are some of the updates planned:

  • Improved communications with ‘allied flight reports’ enabled
  • Re-balanced mission success criteria
  • Improved AI reliability while executing their mission tasks
  • Battlefield effects and airfield activity to give the world a more ‘lived in’ feel Our campaign content has not been forgotten.
  • The changes were to the missions only so in-progress campaigns should pick up right where they left off. A similar refresh for older campaigns will take place as the year progresses.

With the status of MAC currently unknown and the hype surrounding the F-14 drawing new players into the series, having a strong set of content with Flaming Cliffs 3 is more important now than ever.

Loving the new Flaming cliffs content. It was about time that they refreshed all the campaigns and missions for the FC3 aircraft. Now if they could also give them the same 2.5 texture treatment than other modules and AI units…

I was hoping that they made all these improvements when MAC was launched, but for some reason it seems that MAC has evaporated. No news or release dates so far. Strange…

The very last we heard was that MAC was going to get its own interface and possibly go standalone and then silence after that.

I’m wondering if they are separating it out from DCS. I had thought that it was a FC4 analog but it sure seems like it may have taken a different direction – purely conjecture until we get some official word.

That’s pretty disappointing to hear. I was kinda hoping that MAC would help bridge some of the more hardcore flight sim audience and the ‘casual’ flight community together. If it does go separate – I only hope it doesn’t pit two different communities against each other. But instead work in competition with maybe (Ace combat) in some form.

But at the vary least I hope they can keep multiplayer integrated in some form – like a “Hardcore” Option for MAC that can let MAC users experiment with a more professional level of flight in DCS. Taking to the sky with the DCS community and maybe bridging more people over.

Hopefully we’ll hear what their plans are soon. It’ll be interesting to see just what direction they take it, how it will connect with DCS and all of those pieces in between.

This makes me sore tempted to fire up DCS and get both the Hornet and F-14 modules, but ultimately there’s just not enough time in the day, so I’m going to have to stick with my P-47 in IL-2 for now.

But kudos for making such attractive modules.
