IL-2 3.201 dev diary includes Tank Crew, Flying Circus and Bodenplatte

It’s a triple threat this week for the IL-2 developer diary as the team lays out new details and updates for all three in-development titles: IL-2: Battle of Bodenplatte, Tank Crew – Clash at Prokhorovka, and Flying Circus Vol 1. It’s a big update and it runs the gamut from aircraft to tanks, maps, and sounds. It’s a lot so let’s get to it!

Tank Crew campaign comes in 3.201

Tank Crew – Clash at Prokhorovka is the great experiment in the IL-2 series and along with ten tanks and ample opportunities for multiplayer, the series is also getting a single player experience with two heavily researched campaigns. One for the Russians and the other for the Germans.

The two 10-mission campaigns will rely on an updated commander system that will let you control the crew and the rest of the platoon as well. Multiple other improvements are also due:

  • A new occlusion system for markers which will take into account ground and aerial objects that are obscured by tanks, trees, aircraft, buildings, etc. This seems to be a fundamental change to the object marker (or icons) meta that will have bigger implications. We’ll see how this plays out.
  • Turret movement has been changed and apparently now behaves similar to the way the M4A2 does. I’ll have to check and see what that’s like to find out what the difference is. Clearly the team is still tweaking the feel of the Tank Crew product and that’s not a bad thing! A new overlay is being added to show you turret position too.
  • Tank Crew tanks now have a more detailed startup procedure than before with both animations and sounds to help represent it. This likely brings tanks to the same level as aircraft.
  • Tank handling has been improved.
  • Interior and exterior details have also been improved.

The campaigns are due sometime in October while the other improvements are likely due in the next patch slated to come sometime any time now. It could be as early as the beginning of next week.

The diary also includes new images of the SU-122 self propelled gun. The SU-122 was essentially a T-34 chassis with the turret removed and in its place a 122 mm M-30S howitzer with limited horizontal and reasonable vertical traversal range. The 122 mm was powerful enough to blow a turret off a Tiger I tank when hit directly – such was the brute force of the 122mm HE shell. The tank was also used to attack enemy strongholds.

Flying Circus really coming together

Sometimes it takes a while for a project to come together and I have found through the development of Battle of Stalingrad, Moscow, and Kuban that it’s the map that really starts to make the project feel complete.

With today’s update we now have a whole bunch of images of the new Arras map. It draws heavily on technology developed for Bodenplatte and the map has that similar western European feel – yet it has some of its own charm too.

Also included is a new video showing off how the pilot physiology updates will affect Flying Circus aircraft. This is yet another example of why Flying Circus, bringing the best of Rise of Flight to the IL-2: Great Battles Series engine pays off in different ways. Flying Circus pilots will have the same updated physiology effects with enhanced (and real world influenced) modeling of pilots under different G-loads. Also spotted in the background is the Arras map!

I’m excited right now about Flying Circus as this is the part where the title really starts to draw together. I remain optimistic that Vol 1 will lay the grounds for a Vol 2 that may even be bigger than the first.

New Bodenplatte and general IL-2 updates

One of the announcements this week was the team has further improved the texture work on the Hawker Tempest Mark V. The differences on this are subtle but the close up imagery shows off the fine detailing and imperfections in the metal. Impressive!

Another two aircraft getting improved visuals are the Bf109G-2 and IL-2 Model 1942 which both get 4K skins thanks to Martin =ICDP= Catney and Francisco =BlackHellHound1= Bindraban. Great work folks! They look spectacular!

New sounds are being worked on well, likely in conjunction with updated FMOD sound system. While I think the differences appear subtle here I suspect the repercussions of improvements to sound will eventually filter out through the rest of the series.

The hype is at an all time high

The IL-2: Great Battle Series announced back in 2017 that they would be working on three new titles for the future of the series. Drawing on technology’s developed for past titles and on new features developed especially for these new entrants, the series has been building towards a crescendo. We’ve nearly hit that point where the dreams of late 2017 are now coming true and its in evidence by recent developer diaries. The three titles are anywhere from several weeks to a few months away from being completed.

And we look to the future with a lot of hope too!

    I really like the sound in DCS, and all they do to make it feel realistic!

    I’m suprised by the FC pictures, I didn’t know it had (or was about to get) large cities, I thought it was mostly country scenery. I don’t own it but I’m more and more tempted to try, are there different types of missions or is it mostly dogfighting? (which is fun in itself)

    Tank Crew sounds like a lot of fun too 🙂

      Indeed! Part of the delay, I suspect, was Urga Media waiting for 1C to perfect their city block system for Bodenplatte’s Rhineland map and then bring that to the Arras map.

      Arras is smaller mind you. It’s supposedly only about 100×100 but that should be fine for biplanes.

      Vol 1 seems mostly multiplayer and QMB oriented though I know they are trying to bring more single player scripted campaign content to players (see my last Community Q&A).

      The hope I have is that Vol 1 leads to a Vol 2 which will have a bigger map and stronger SP.

    I wonder what else we’ll get for FC1 after this update, e.g. Campaign, missions, etc? I’m looking very forward to this update, P-38, Rhineland map. I just hope that we don’t have a problem like last update as this will probably be the largest if not very large update.
