Japan gets an upgrade in free Flight Simulator update

Microsoft and Asobo Studios announced today that the first of what are likely to be many world updates is coming to Flight Simulator. Japan is the first country/region to see an upgrade with new photogrammetry, custom buildings and hand crafted airports all coming for free. Let’s have a look!

Japan Upgraded

Asobo Studio’s has talked a little bit about what their post release strategy would be indicating that world updates would be part of that strategy and so we have our first in the update coming for Japan. The update includes new photogammetry for the following cities: Sendai, Takamatsu, Tokushima, Tokyo, Utsunomiya and Yokohama. Six hancrafted airports are also coming: Hachijojima, Kerama, Kushiro, Nagasaki, Shimojishima, and Suwanosejima. There will also be three new Landing Challenges set at Japanese airports. An upgraded digital elevation map for the entire country which should boost accuracy and make for more realistic interpretations of these areas.

The best part of all is that this update will be free AND it’s coming soon – September 29th to be exact.

Future updates

Asobo Studios is also working on future updates as well including free world updates and paid DLC packages as well. Here’s what they had to say about that today:

As we’ve always said, our launch in August was just the beginning. Our goal is to provide you with a meaningful update to the sim every month. In addition to increasing the visual detail of the planet with future World Updates, we also plan to add Simulation Updates every 2-3 months that will further enhance the overall sim experience. On top of that, we are developing some exciting paid DLC that we plan to rollout over the coming months and years, and we will share more information in the future. We are on an incredible journey together and we are committed to work with you, the community, to continue to improve and evolve Microsoft Flight Simulator for many years to come.

Bugs addressed

Today’s update also includes an update to their bug tracker which has grown to encompass a lot of the issues with the sim. Flight Simulator has not had a perfect release and there’s a great deal of items that need to be dealt with.

Topping out the list are G1000/3000 and autopilot issues, left engine starting and dying issues on the A320, performance issues, real time traffic issues, and more. It’s all covered in the Developer Update so you may want to have a look to see if your issue is on the list. If not, submit a bug report. It seems that the developers are taking seriously the number of bugs submitted on the forum and updating the tracker with each developer update.

Very nice! This thing is going to need a 1TB drive all on its own within a year.

    And I don’t mind.
