The team at 1CGS, the folks behind IL-2 Sturmovik: Great Battles Series are looking back at a long year behind us in 2020 and to the future in 2021. They’ve also announced a new sale. Let’s have a look at everything talked about in the update and the things you need to know about what’s coming next!
Looking back before we look ahead
It’s always good to take stock of what you have, what’s been achieved, and then look to what comes next. 1CGS was building their aircraft list and technology through the year and have achieved some impressive things. The update from the team goes over all of the major accomplishments of the team over the last four quarters of 2020 including 6 aircraft released, 3 tanks, and 600+ notable changes and improvements to the sim.
I’ll let their own list speak for itself if you want to read it but I will call out some highlights including the release of the Yak-9, Yak-9T, PzKpfw V Ausf.D ‘Panther’ for Tank Crew, the Hurricane Mark II and the new deferred rendering system which simultaneously improved the visuals across the board for the whole sim and seemed to maintain performance or even make it better. 1CGS have even managed to tame the jagged aircraft graphical effects when an aircraft flies in front of clouds. There were also a great many 4K skins added to the sim this year as well which I appreciate each and every time I see them.
Bottom line for me is that IL-2 Sturmovik: Great Battles has never run as well or looked as good as it does now.
1CGS has done all of this while facing down the same issues that nearly all of us have been – the global health crisis in the form of the COVID-19 pandemic. It’s directly affected the 1CGS team (and I know it has affected many of you too) with several members taking ill at various points though fortunately everyone has been reported as having recovered.
Teases for the year ahead
There’s some great details revealed in their plans for the year ahead including a planned release list and teases for some new features coming. Let’s tackle some of the bigger items starting with a complete list of what 1CGS is hoping to release over the next 12+ months and roughly what order they will be coming in:
- Fokker D.VIII
- Spad 7 150hp
- Spitfire Mk.XIV
- Fw-190 A-6
- Nieuport 28.C1
- Spad 7 180hp
- GAZ-MM 72-K
- Sd. Kfz. 10 + Flak38
- Typhoon Mk.Ib
- Pfalz D.XII
- Sopwith Triplane
- Breguet 14.B2
- DFW C.V.
- Airco DH.4
- Ju 88 C-6
- Handley Page 0-400
- Gotha G.V
- B-26 (AI)
- V-1 Cruise Missile
- Mosquito FB Mk.VI
The list is an ambitious one and it’s clear that 1CGS has been doing a lot of work over the last year getting ready for what it looks like a banner year for the series. The first 6 new items to be released including the much awaited Spitfire XIV and the first new aircraft for Flying Circus Vol 2.
Also coming are the GAZ-MM 72-K and Sd. Kfz. 10 + Flak38 of which I think will be an interesting and potentially gameplay changing addition to the series.
By the middle part of the year we should be getting into some interesting new types for both Flying Circus and Battle of Normandy while the back half of 2021 and perhaps early 2022 will be filled with a lot of things to like for bomber and attack plane fans.
Also mentioned in the update is Air Marshal which will hopefully be coming in 2021. This long awaited feature is something that I’m excited to know more about. What has been described to me has great potential!
Also interesting to note are comments on new effects and maybe (maybe was written in twice) a new sky dome and new clouds. It sounds like IL-2 might be adding itself to the list of sims that are likely to overhaul the way they present clouds and weather in 2021. And IL-2 is still one of the best looking despite the advances we’ve seen from others. Pushing ahead helps keep the sim competitive so it’s good to see 1CGS keeping up and forging ahead.
Finally, the update addresses a couple of the key questions being put out there by many in the community.
And yes, we know you would very much like to see a flyable B-25, C-47 and Li-2. As would do we! We would love to build them for you, but we must first find a pathway for that within the team or qualified partner of which there are few, but you never know what will happen!?!? We also have a couple Collector Planes we want to build for Flying Circus, but we need to make progress on FC2 first which as you know from the announcement is more ambitious than FC1.Jason Williams on the IL-2 forum
I’m not going to read between the lines too much here except to say that I think this is the best we’ve heard so far from the team that they are very likely exploring options on how they can build these aircraft and sell them to us. A lot of people have asked for the B-25 and the C-47 (as well as the Li-2 – a Russian license built C-47) and it’s clear to me that the detail with which they have built these aircraft have indicated that they intend to make their best effort to make these fly in the future.
It’s not a confirmation, but it sounds like it’s something that is being worked on. That’s hope enough for me!
The sale is on!
In-case you were waiting on yet another great sale, IL-2 is taking part in the Steam Winter Sale which is now on with savings of 25-85% on different products in the IL-2 store. Check out the announcement here!
