Team Fusion provides VR updates on IL-2 Blitz and Tobruk

Pilots familiar with IL-2: Sturmovik – Cliffs of Dover and Desert Wings – Tobruk will know that VR has been a long requested feature. Now we’re starting to see some direct progress in relation to it as the Team Fusion Simulations group works to upgrade some cockpits to support VR. Let’s have a look!

Cockpit upgrades

In a pair of updates, Team Fusion shared details on their upgrades to the Spitfire cockpit that will better prepare it for VR. Artists are upgrading various components of the cockpit to make them 3D instead of a hybrid of 2D and 3D as found in some of the oldest cockpits in the series. Their work in the Spitfire focuses on the throttle, trim wheel, fuses, cables, cable clips, bolts and chains

A clarification posted after the initial update helps illuminate a bit more of the behind the scenes of the process.

Some of the original aircraft from the first Maddox games release of CLIFFS had cockpits which were a mix of 2D and 3D. (mostly Spitfire/Hurricane… these aircraft were built first… the 109’s and others which were built later in development were full 3D)

Team Fusion Simulations

Cliffs of Dover had a protracted development cycle under the original developer, Maddox Games, and it’s interesting to learn how things changed and evolved as that project came together.

Team Fusion goes on to make it clear that later aircraft including the ones done by Team Fusion Simulations for Desert Wings – Tobruk are all done in 3D and thus VR ready.

Some interesting updates for the series.

  1. This is such exciting news to me. I bought Tobruk just to support these guys, but I’ve never flown it because of the lack of VR. I have a basic flight pit with no monitor, so I can’t really fly outside of VR.

I’m in the same state. I’ve got my stick and throttle set up kittycorner to my desk, so, so I’m also a VR only pilot, and I also picked up a copy of Tobruk to have it on hand if VR got implemented.

Once it does go live, I’m going to focus on wrapping up that WWI campaign and start up on a Cliff of Dover one. When it first came out, I had enough issues with it, I never got to fly it much back in the day.

      Really cool.

Pretty much the same for me as well; I even went so far as to install it in a metaphysical attempt to influence their intent… hey! I guess it worked!
