You’ve been asking for it and it looks like it might finally be arriving sooner than later. There’s a new DCS: Mosquito teaser out and you can watch it right now.
Teaser time
A short video has been released by Eagle Dynamics on their YouTube channel called “The Mossies are coming!” with some grainy black and white images from real Mosquito operations during WWII interspersed with clips from DCS World done in a similar style.
One of the clips appears to be from the Operation Jericho prison break operation which then jumps to the DCS World version of the same location. It’s a cool sequence! Check out the short video right now.
Release imminent?
Things are likely about to heat up for DCS: Mosquito fans as teasers like this one tend to come out not too far ahead of an actual release.
You may recal’ that the release of this project was intended for earlier in the year, however, it was held back amidst rumours and a few details that the exterior 3D model wasn’t quite up to scratch. It sounds like Eagle Dynamics has been remaking a lot of the exterior work over the last few months and they are finally about to show it off.

Well tomorrow or next week, there’s going to be a solid shot of whiskey for the first ride. Really looking forward to seeing the cockpit textures. Looks like they might be very, very good. P-47 class or better.
It’s going to be an initial one-hour flight of playing with the clouds and the tree tops.

On DCS’ roadmap, it’s Q3. Not always the most accurate but it’s usually fairly reasonable when it’s not too far away.

It’s funny, on the store page, there are 12 Early Access modules against 33 released ones, so that’s 26% (there are a few new 3rd parties though). I’m surprised to see the Yak-52 is still EA.

Exactly half are 3rd Party, one is the Asset Pack that’s still in Early Access just because we are always adding new content. Aside from the Yak-52 that’s on hold right now all have their own teams and are in active development.

Nothing aainst you or DCS, old chap but from a business (and coherence) perspective I really feel that it should have stuck to the 1950 and onwards period. Not that the WW2 stuff is bad, but it does remain a little bit lost while a focus on a ‘complete’ Korea, Vietnam or even maybe an Okinawa (see the enthusiasm / misery on the IL-2 forums that it was Normandy not Pacific) would have been a better if possibly more difficult approach. The WW2 birds need such a lot of work in so many areas (damage model) that it strikes me as a case of energy and investment dissipation: they benefit less from the skill and knowledge base of the modern stuff and you are competing against BoX which frankly is not a great approach to P&L.
I know it’s not as simple as that, but as a consultant I would strongly recommend that DCS focus is on the wonderful and under-represented world of jets and the conflicts ion which they were involved and that DCS does so well!

I’m just observing a fact. It means several things, mostly that those are long developments and that it doesn’t stop ED from thinking ahead to new modules. Besides, I’m pretty sure not everyone can work at the same time on one module. So it’s mostly positive.
It also means there is a strong focus on modules, which has always left me perplexed. It’s only my opinion, but I’d rather have more effort put in the tools to develop campaigns and in the environment, so that those modules can really shine. But I don’t know the market share structure, and how it’s divided between single player and multiplayer customers.
For example, I made a few missions but I was appalled at the ME. Even simple things as the wind direction that is incorrect, or not being able to copy / paste from one mission to the next (or better, base them on a common library). Lots of paradigms used in S/W development could be mapped to campaign design.
The whole platform is also very unstable, I remember each DCS update breaking so many campaigns and modules. And bugs that stay literally for years (remember the bug fix I gave you a few years ago for the A-10C messed up mouse control? All with test results and details? It has been ignored and never been integrated, the bugs have even been ported to the A-10C II for crying out loud).
So I’m in awe at the modules, when they’re not “on hold” for so long, but the rest… To be fair I’ve seen a lot of effort recently (and I admit I’m not playing it anymore because of the reasons above, and the fact we need a very high-end system to run DCS now).

Blue S, I’m not sure if you have flown DCS WWII recently, as the damage model has been vastly improved. With the push ED has made in the last year or two, the WWII scene is in a lot better place, and I’m optimistic for the future. Yes it needs more work, but its never finished. A release of “lower effort” AI aircraft for prevalent types of the era would go a long way to fleshing it out. IL2 though great in its own right is more like FC3 for good and bad. I much prefer the immersion of DCS WWII compared to IL2 aircraft. Again, not a knock on IL2; I enjoy that as well, but its not the same.
