DCS: Syria map extension gets the spotlight

A post by Ugra Media developer MAESTR0 on the DCS World forums has included two new videos and over a dozen new screenshots and two new videos showcasing a major extension of the DCS: Syria map. Here’s what we know about the expansion.

New videos, screenshots, and when

We’ve known for some time that DCS: Syria was getting an extension. Now we know quite a bit more about what that extension will look like. The map is expanding 250km to the east and expanding all the way to Deir ez Zor Air Base which I’ve marked on the Google map image above.

Another notable point on the map, also marked above, is the Al Tanf Outpost which is an American base located inside of Syria. It had been part of US efforts against ISIS during 2016-17 and beyond and my limited reading on the base is that it’s still there.

Both of these key points on the expanded map get a video tour in the new update. Here’s the first with a quick tour around Deiz ez-Zor.

And then a second tour featuring Al Tanf Outpost.

There’s also over a dozen other screenshots showing off an airports in Turkey and Iraq, a Lafarge cement plant and helicopter base, a Turkish dam, abandoned airfields, and more. Here are just a few of those screenshots.

Increasing utility and release date

DCS: Syria has been out for some time now and was already considered a large map with a great deal of variety and versatility for scenarios. Now the map is expanding even more providing increased versatility. It wasn’t something I was expecting after the last expansion but it does help push the narrative that this map may be the best that’s available in DCS World at the moment.

DCS: Syria is already a “heavy” map requiring ample computing power to make work smoothly so I don’t know what these additions will do to those requirements. DCS World has been getting better at dealing with larger maps and its possible that these further additions represent little in extra performance needs as elements will be loaded in and out as needed. The real test of course will be to put it into action.

We don’t know exactly when this update is coming but we now know that it’s connected with another big DCS World release. On a recent DCS: AH-64D video, Matt Wagner was also asked about the Syria map extension and his answer was captured in this r/Hoggit post.

Look for the AH-64D and the new Syria update coming sometime soon. When? I’m guessing it will be closer to the end of March but we’ll see how things progress.

For now, check out the dozen plus screenshots and other updates from Ugra Media right here.

    Nice!

That cement plant looks like the mother of all targets. 🙂

This map is incredible! I truly wish we could get some similar expansions to the others, esp NTTR and PG.

Interesting note: several of the new airfields are IRL abandoned and disabled by large earth berms built on runways & taxiways. And in the game, you can still see the berms on the concrete of the runway! I guess they’re using a mix of sat imagery, which is a little surprising (but cool).

That is interesting. Yeah I’m not sure exactly the time period that they are shooting for here… its sort of a mix of times (all modern and recent).

The more airfields, the merrier! I’m just as happy flying an A-10 on Normandy as a D9 on Syria 🙂

That’s always a fun experience. I’ve done that in MSFS and it was sort of a weird but fun experience 🙂

You’ll have to tell us where it is and we’ll make it the HQ to be defended to the last man.
