Flight Journal: The joy of just flying around

A lot of the time I’m doing a virtual flight with a purpose. Fly from point A to B in the most basic of situations. In some of my combat sorties things do get more complicated but ultimately its about flying with a very specific goal. Sometimes, however, I think it’s good to remember that you can hop in a sim without a goal and still have fun.

Just fly

In this scenario I hopped into Microsoft Flight Simulator with friends. Our collective time was short so this was all about getting maximum fun in a short time.

We decided to do some flying around Catalina island. The airplane? Pits Special S3 aerobatic biplane. Hot start on the runway and a formation takeoff to kick off the fun. What followed was about 15 minutes of just flying around, matching formations, matching maneuvers, chasing, terrain following, and just generally soaking in the ambience.

No goals. No objectives. Just flying.

Microsoft Flight Simulator gave us a great canvas to experience this moment in time. Just flying around and doing goofy maneuvers completely unencumbered by anything. It was terrific fun! Short lived but that’s how it goes sometimes.

So, remember to go and experience the joy of flight in a flight sim. Not every moment has to be driven by a big objective and not every flight requires a deep examination or planning. This is the luxury of a flight sim. You can just fly!

Great post. Btw, wasn’t ‘Just Fly’ a name of the flight sim in the 90s?

It might have been. I don’t remember that one!

It was called “Fly!” and was better than MSFS at the time in my opinion.

This is one of the magic things about MSFS – instant multi-player over photo-real scenery, anywhere in the world.
You just can’t do that in ANY other sim.

That said, no matter what the sim, I do like flying just for the sake of it.
