It’s been just over a week since VKB-Sim teased and then announced their next major hardware release revealing not one but two significant hardware releases to their line-up. One is the fourth iteration of their popular Gunfighter series with the Mark IV replacing the Mark III. There’s also the long awaited STECS (previously TECS) throttle system. Here’s what we know!

STECS base and add-ons

VKB has revealed their long awaited throttle system and it comes packing a ton of features including plenty of modularity and the potential for even more configurations down the road.

STECS stands for Single|Twin Engine Control System which VKB suggests may come in a mono-grip at some point in the future while all currently announced products feature a split grip in a similar way to how many of their competitors have offered. What VKB seem to be doing that takes them in a slightly different direction is their modularity which enables you to buy and configure the throttle setup in a wide variety of configurations.

The base has a two axis contactless MaRS (magnetic-resistance sensor) system with 4 ball bearings on the main axes and, according to VKB, glass-reinforced plastic in all loaded structural parts. I assume that means that the plastic parts that are carrying weight will be more robust than conventional plastic.

VKB report that the base will have a user-friendly detent system that can be installed in a minute or two. There’s a frame with a detent holder with a screw and nut system to affix the detents into place. Frames are color-coded and can then be matched to a rotating switch that tells the onboard software which configuration is in place. Interesting!

There are a few different types of detents available:

  • L-shape – unidirectional regular, and unidirectional large. creates a step on one side of the lever movement.
  • V-shape – bi-directional regular, and bi-directional large. Creates a step on both sides of the lever movement.
  • M-shape – bi-directional with a centering indent.

There are a couple of extensions to the base including the Auxiliary Throttle Extension and and the Standard Throttle Extension module. (ATEM and STEM in VKB terminology).

There’s also a button module that provide for 3 different interchangeable modules. A long-travel button, a 3 position hat, and a 4 position hat with button press. That last one comes with multiple caps to let you configure the feel for each button.

Four main versions

VKB are offering four packages that are all essentially pre-configured with different modules in one package but the message is clear that you can buy the base package only and then add-on additional extensions and button configurations later on.

VKB does point out that the STECS Mini (top left) is intended to be used with a chair, cockpit, or holder as the lightweight base needs to be affixed to stay in place. It seems to be unique in that it does not have the ability to be used with a front extension holder while the other three will.

The STECS Mini Plus (top right) gets the ATEM extension and a steel platform that can be used as standalone or on holders.

STECS Standard (bottom left) has a steel platform as well and this one is apparently compatible with the holes used by the Thrustmaster Warthog. Can be used on a desk or on holders. It has the STEM extension packaged in as well.

Finally we have STECS MAX (bottom right) which basically has everything fixing the ATEM to the front and the STEM module on the front with a holder.

That all sounds good and the modularity suggests that you can potentially buy a cheaper package and then add features later if you feel like you want to add them on. Speaking of pricing, we know what the pricing will be for North America:

  • STECS MINI $199 USD
  • STECS MINI PLUS $219 USD
  • STECS STANDARD $279 USD
  • STECS MAX $319 USD

I suspect based on feature and pricing that STECS MINI PLUS or maybe the STANDARD variant will be the volume sellers.

Gunfighter IV

The other news from VKB is that they are releasing their Gunfighter IV model to replace the Gunfighter III. Visually the Gunfighter III is the same and all of the changes are under the hood. A new generation clutch and spring pre-tighteners are all setup to provide for more control and smoother function.

The Gunfighter IV has a new connector as well which allows for the rotation of the stick without damaging the connectors.

Blackbox Mk3 is also coming. This is a hub for VKB devices and the new varant is reportedly smarter than before with the ability to detect and configure itself for use with new devices.

VKB-Sim are realizing a nearly complete flight sim setup here with a high end grip and base as well as a HOTAS system to rival its competitors. A nearly all VKB setup is now possible for combat flight sim fans or anyone who prefers this type of arrangement.

  1. Advertisement worked 😉 Going to save up some money to replace my Thrustmaster gear with new gear.
I just wonder anyone here been using VKB OmniThrottle for DCS, IL2 ?

    1. I wouldn’t mind some opinions of the OmniThrottle as well. It’s also an option for me.

I run an Omni throttle for star citizen, the gladiator evo with the ota is a joy for me. It doesn’t have detents and to my disappointment it does not allow quick lockout of the x axis (got to open it up to install the plate), it is a very well made stick. Been using and abusing it for over a year.

  2. With the lack of room on my desk, it looks like I’ll be looking at buying the STECS Mini Plus at some time to replace my cheap Flashfire Accelerator throttle which has done a good job considering the price I paid for it.

I feel like Virpil gets more attention for whatever reason, but I’ve always been much happier with the quality, price, reliability and configurability of my VKB setup ever since I switched about three years ago. I’m never going back!

  4. Brilliant idea to match the mounting holes with the Warthog as just about every retail simpit, including the new ones from NLR are pre-drilled for it. I’ve been waiting for a cheaper-than-Virpil throttle to replace my TM throttle that has more than paid for itself (paid $88 for it new). I may even sell my VKB Gladiator amd upgrade to the new Gunfighter…well see.

Man, I love my Hotas X and plan on it giving me many years of joy but I’d be lying if I said I didn’t check out this super top end gear options all the time. Looks so clean. Always on the top of my “just won the lotto” splurg list lol.

I have a VKB NXT and it is an awesome value. All of the quality and smoothness of the highest end sticks for 1/3 of the price. If you ever have some cash to upgrade, I think VKB is the best quality/value combo. I’m hoping I can grab the throttle in the next couple years.

  6. I decided to try the Omnithrottle since Virpil CM3 was out of my budget and anything else on the market seemed like something I would replace in the near future. I play DCS, IL2, and Elite Dangerous and thought the Omnithrottle would be a good compromise. It’s fantastic for space sims, but I’ve been really surprised how much I enjoy it in the flight sims as well. I think a lot of people recommend against it for IL2/DCS because they haven’t tried it. For single engine planes and jets, the only real disadvantage is not having detents for afterburner/WEP. I solved this by programming the LED to go red after 75% on the y-axis and it matches up really well. The other thing I’ve found is I hated having to change the lockout option on the x-axis when switching between space sims and flight sims. In the end I’ve just tightened down the x-axis with the clutch so that it only moves if I give it some force. Turns out I’m not bothered by it in either type of sim that way. The grip has lots of buttons for DCS, especially if you get a little creative with programming it in the software. The big hang-up of course is not having a split throttle. Maybe you can figure out a way to simulate it using the x-axis though? I haven’t tried. Anyways, I can recommend the Omnithrottle for flight sims if you don’t mind those drawbacks. (That being said, I might be buying a STECS mini plus anyways!)

    1. Thanks. I am currently trying to decide on a whole new set of flight controls. Right now I am using Thrustmaster T16000M and the cheap Thrustmaster Throttle on Mounts, (and unfortunately only Thrustmaster Racing Pedals for Pedals).
Are you by chance also using the VKB Rudder Pedals? If so since they operate verticaly are they difficult to use under a desk without bumping your knees into the desk?
I might go for VKB Right Hand Stick with Twist Option, STECS mini or OmniThrottle, VKB Rudder Pedals.
Also love the Virpil Constellation Alpha but of course it is a much higher price.
One Advantage I could see in using the Omni Throttle over the STECS mini is , you could use sideways movement for rudder control. Also two Sticks looks kind of cool.

    2. Thanks for the comments on the Omnithrottle. It’s still in my options to get if I don’t get the STECS Mini Plus.

  7. Now I am starting to think of buying 2 Gunfighter Sticks one for Helicopters one for planes plus also Rudder Pedals and the throttle. Just waiting for extensions and still having to decide on a grip.
Anyone using Gunfighter for Helicopters? Which gip did you pick?
