We’ve got a new update from Magnitude-3 (you may still remember them as Leatherneck Simulations) and this one is almost entirely focused on their DCS: F4U Corsair project. Let’s have a look!

Corsair update

Magnitude-3 report that they are into their second round of testing on the F4U Corsair. Flight model parameters are apparently coming together nicely with a special focus right now on getting the glide ratios in different scenarios tuned to an accurate level.

Their art team have been busy too tuning the work on the cockpit in particular. Textures have been adjusted to better match recent updates to DCS World. That includes making sure that the colours and lighting are physically accurate to real world values.

Damage models are also well into development with every rib in the aircraft have been created and then destroyed with a lot of detail showing off the physical aspects of aircraft damage. The flight model is also apparently being tuned here to ensure that it accurately reflects the damaged sate.

Other items

Magnitude-3 have also reported that their old website address referencing Leatherneck Studios will expire sometime next year while the new address, magnitude-3.com, will be their home for the future. The website banner has been updated with the newer logo and it looks like they have finally dropped the Leatherneck name.

We haven’t learned anything new in this update on what state their planned USS Essex class carrier is in nor the status on their MiG-21bis 2.0 and F8 Crusader projects are in. Hopefully we’ll learn about these later on down the line and it does seem like the team is focused completely on getting the Corsair done. In the meantime, the Corsair looks superb! 1. Another year, another no-show for the Corsair. It’s becoming a meme at this point.

  2. It’s probably the best Corsair sim ever.

Ship it in Early Access and gild the rest of the lily over time.

  3. For what its worth, really looking forward to this. with a bit more direction DCS could be the only WW2 aviation sim we need … Please don’t get me wrong, wish the forthcoming Combat Pilot sim every success too and those still developing for Cliffs of Dover … Oleg did good work there but it was quite unfinished upon release, still have the cloth map from the original box release. Guys are doing good though building upon that sim, but its its UI needs work IMHO, its clunky and horrible and just plain hard work sorting control options ETC … I hope this is on their work plan, would pay for that.

  4. I’m very, very much looking forward to this…. but these guys have taken so long that I’m pissed they have ‘dibs’ on the F-8 Crusader. The Corsair has been in development since what, 2015? Doesn’t bode well for the F-8. The F4U looks immaculate, as it should considering the amount of time its been in the oven – I’m sure WWII carrier ops will be great fun whenever it gets here…

…At this point… that could easily be 2025 as we’ve seen NOTHING about the Essex in motion or the Marianas WWII map they’re ‘working on’ (how a map that’s 99% water takes so long to develop … means they aren’t working on it). We’ve seen nothing but empty deck screenshots of the Essex. My expectations are quite low. It won’t surprise me if Mag 3 ends up waiting for the F6F to release as that’ll likely coincide with the release of the Marianas. Haven’t seen anything related to the F6F either…

    1. It has been a protracted process to bring this airplane together. I don’t know what the full story is but I’m hopeful it’ll be a terrific experience when it arrives.

We haven’t heard about the status of the Essex. That’ll be interesting to see. There’s also several Japanese assets and where those fit I’m not sure either.

Marianas WWII it’s worth remembering is an Eagle Dynamics project so that and the F6F is on them for sure.

I’m hopeful when we start to see content arrive that there’s a cohesive plan for the content. A Corsair by itself is interesting but one that arrives with a lot to do would be terrific.
