A bunch of DCS World news to round-up this week. Eagle Dynamics, as usual, provided us with an update on some features coming to DCS World with special attention given to the Mosquito and Supercarrier – we haven’t heard about those in a while. Then its over to the third parties where we have the F-15E with some new updates there and Heatblur who made a very interesting comment the other day on the future of the F-14. Let’s have a look!

Supercarrier update

It’s been a little while since we last had a Supercarrier status update. Now we’ve got a new one. The first image shows us the Airboss interface. The station will apparently offer us a great view of the flight deck, let players control the speed and direction of the carrier, have access to an ATC overview and have integrated radios and voice chat interoperability. Even lights and elevator controls are planned for future updates.

Then we also have this new image of the Briefing Room. This hub for mission planning will offer a full 3D briefing room that can feature customizable squadron markings. A tablet can be used to update the aircraft and plan the mission route.

This should be quite an interesting update to the Supercarrier experience.

Mosquito update

Eagle Dynamics are making some updates to the Mosquito and are, in essence, using the module as a prototype for some enhanced landing gear physics updates. The update this week indicates that they have improved their multi-component physics for the landing gear. Better simulation of tire and shock absorber dynamics will provide a new and more realistic feeling for the aircraft in motion.

Update coming with the next open beta.

JSOW for F-15E

This image, tweeted by Baltic Dragon, shows off the F-15E deploying the JSOW. The capability is set to arrive soon (possibly the next open beta) following on from the addition of JDAMs in the previous update. The weapon will give the F-15E new stand-off capabilities with the caveat that the USAF only ever employed the sub-munition AGM-154A model and not the bunker busting AGM-154C model.

Baltic Dragon is currently writing the manual update for this weapon together with two other new features. The F-15E is also getting IFF (which has been inop so far) and AAI which is, as I understand it, similar to the Non-Cooperative Target Recognition (NCTR) some of you may be familiar with on the Hornet.

Heatblur hints F-14 journey not over

DCS: F-14 has been extremely highly regarded by the community as being one of the best modules to ever release for the series. Its in heady company too but a combination of quality and style have really served to make this a top notch experience. Fans of the module have been asking, periodically about what other options might come our way. An F-14B with the Sparrowhawk HUD upgrade? An F-14D? A few readers made me aware of an exchange this week where a question on the TARPS update received a slightly different answer than usual. Here’s the question:

Awesome, are there any plans in the future for the upgraded HUD of the late F14Bs? Or even better an F14D?

Heatblur have tended to be more non-committal over the years over future updates in this area, however, this one sounds like something is in the works.

Yes; our F-14 journey is not over and once we’ve unified the codebases we will start our next Tomcat trek.

Fascinating information indeed. What this means, however, is somewhat unclear and despite the F-14’s age, some of the newer models are still highly classified with little public information available about them. Still, the prospect of a more modern F-14B or even a F-14D model will surely cause a stir.

  1. I wish it was an F-14D but there’s just no way. The D was for all intents and purposes a completely new aircraft and they’ve said they don’t have the documentation they’d need to do it justice. More likely something like a few more variants of the A.

    1. An improved HUD would be welcome.

Never quite understood the fascination with the F-14A though. The B has enough quirks/’character’ without adding weaker/more temperamental engines.

      1. This is what I have always said, I don’t see the point in flying a less capable aircraft model than what we currently have (the F-14B) beyond wanting to make your life more difficult.

      2. The F-14A was the only F-14 from its introduction in 1974 through the B model in 1987, so it’s a good 13 year block when the A model was it.

      3. Yes, I get that the A was around for a while. I just personally find it unappealing to iterate a module backwards in time (much like I wouldn’t be overly interested if they started adding earlier blocks to the F-16 than the current Block 50). I get the mileage for others may vary, and I get that confidentiality surrounding later features is an issue but i’d rather have more capability in any given module than less.

      4. I can certainly understand wanting to fly the more capable airplane. But I tend to chase experiences rather than capabilities (though they are nice to have) so flying a WWI kite is just as appealing as flying both F-14A and B. Flying the B gave me a lot of confidence and when I went back to the F-14A I really understood better all of the real world comments about how bad those engines were. From a flight sim experience perspective that was extremely enjoyable for me.

Mileage will vary for sure 🙂

    2. The US Navy has agreed to declassify everything for the F-14D except for the IRST and ALQ-165. So there is hope.

  2. IronMike did walk that comment back a bit. Something along the lines of, “I have to stop posting late at night when I’m dead tired…”. Which I take to mean they’re still not quite sure/ready to commit to what they’ll be able to add even now.

In any case, I’ve often thought that my “perfect” DCS experience would be having the Hornet cockpit in the Tomcat airframe, so whatever “> B” upgrades HB might bring to DCS Tomcat will be welcome!

    1. Hah! Well we’ve all been there, a bit overtired and a bit oversharing. Still I think the core message seems to remain that they intend to do more with the F-14. Exciting almost no matter what they do.

  3. I want all the ‘A’s, F14A, F16A, F18A, etc.
But sure this is strange fascination … cause we all know that what we really want are YF14, YF16, YF17 😀

  4. Supercarrier Update?

One of the two images is almost the same screenshot as in the 2021 newsletter, only taken a meter back:

The airboss does look interesting, but it’s touch to take a slot for it knowing that could have been another aircraft in use.

    1. The visual work on these Supercarrier features seems to have been done quite a while ago. At the usual high standards so it looks great but the stuff they can’t really show us until it’s ready is the programming.

  5. Indeed, so I don’t get why folks are getting excited over screenshots. Plus when they label things “Features for Q321”, it’s a bit rough….
