Some big news for X-Plane fans as Laminar Research have just announced that they will be doing their own storefront for the sim. Let’s have a look at the announcement, the reaction, and some of the potential for this new development.

An official storefront

It’s perhaps a bit surprising to outsiders but X-Plane has never had its own storefront beyond offering a digital version of the X-Plane software itself. Things are changing, however, with this announcement with Laminar Research following in the footsteps of other sims on the market – notably Microsoft Flight Simulator in offering their own store or marketplace.

Revealed at the Montreal developer conference this weekend, Laminar Research is happy to announce that the X-Plane Store is coming to the platform!

A long-requested feature, the new storefront will provide X-Plane customers with a unique and seamless experience, and create an environment where the fabulous work of our community will be more accessible than ever before. Easy transactions, seamless installation, and DRM options for third-party authors – and it all happens directly in the app! We can’t wait to show you more in the coming months.

Coming 2024

X-Plane on Facebook

This move mimics Microsoft Flight Simulator but also DCS World and the IL-2 series in offering up an official store for X-Plane related products. Coming in 2024, follow-up comments on the Facebook announcement have confirmed that the storefront will be both in the sim and on an external website – offering the best of both worlds.

There will be a webpage, alongside a built-in application in X-Plane.

X-Plane on Facebook

Further, on X/Twitter the official X-Plane/Laminar account has reported that third parties will have options on built-in DRM measures and the like. At present various storefronts use a mishmash of different options but a built in system may offer a smoother experience than previously on offer.

The reaction and potential

Comments on Facebook, X/Twitter and on the X-Plane.org Forums are understandably mixed for a community that has stuck largely with what it knows for a long period of time without substantial shake-ups and this potentially has the chance to shake things up.

Some are lauding the change while simultaneously expressing frustration with the X-Plane.Org store and some of the practices there. Others are concerned that the built-in store will lead to a subscription model. That particular hasn’t typically happened with other online stores with other sims but there’s nonetheless the concern.

Not yet mentioned is which third parties might be signing up. Still, it looks like between this and some legitimate efforts by the official X-Plane accounts to boost third party developers and their products, it does appear that Laminar Research are looking to woo third parties to offer products for the sim and through their own built-in store.

It’ll be interesting to see how this plays out over the coming months as the feature is developed.

  1. So wait, is the current .org store not run by Laminar? I always assumed it was.

At any rate, an in-sim marketplace is something I would highly welcome. I usually try to support add-on devs by purchasing straight from them when possible, but in the case of MSFS the marketplace is just so darn easy. Auto install, auto update. It’s wonderful. I think the X-Plane community will come around once they realize how nice it is to start enjoying something almost immediately after paying for it.

    1. The Org store is independent of Laminar Research but it has been the go to for so long that it kind of feels that way. Making things easier would definitely be nice and a step up from the current status quo.

    2. There is a statement that says “Not affiliated with Laminar Research or Austin Meyer, creator of X-Plane” right under the store logo. It’s true that it’s not very big but it’s there.

      1. Heh, there it is right there! I guess I never gave it much thought to be honest. It wasn’t the prettiest store but XP was never the prettiest sim either (especially as far as UI). Never had any issues with it though.

  2. At the rate their third parties are ditching them for MS, due to unprofitable efforts, they kinda have to try something but I honestly don’t think it will be enough, not to save their retail work anyway. They will always have their professional clients at least

    1. It sort of feels like we’re back to the X-Plane 9/10 era where X-Plane was that “other” sim while FSX/P3D got most of the attention.

I’m not sure what Laminar could do to pull off another commercial success similar version 11. Quality standards set by competitors are so high that the required investment must be staggering.

I think the storefront is a good idea as long as Laminar doesn’t interfere with other distribution channels in any way.

    2. Since I fly both sims, I’m able to keep up with happenings like this.

All in all, I can’t think of more than 2 developers (iniBuilds & Flying Iron Sims) that have “ditched” X-Plane. There have been a couple that have expanded to MSFS but continue to work on XP projects (Cowan Sims).

Nothing’s going on like the absolute bloodletting that’s occurred with P3D & FSX devs…perhaps that’s what you meant?

It really is great that these talented people can finally make a decent living by making MSFS addons.

Laminar will keep doing their thing but I think that while MS are back in the flight sim business the thing that Laminar do will be different from before when they had basically free reign. *shrug*

  3. Overall I think it’s a very good idea, and long overdue.

I would’ve gladly purchased through Laminar Research, and they would’ve made a lot more money from me than the 3 copies of XP vs the several dozens of XP addons I’ve bought.

It won’t be easy, but it’s things they’re already doing since they sell XP itself.

If it weren’t worth it, addon sales would all be direct to developers, right?
