Eagle Dynamics is now offering up pre-orders for the forthcoming DCS: Afghanistan map for DCS World. The new map is aimed at offering a 2008-2010 era recreation of Afghanistan including detailed airbases, terrain and more. It does come with a bit of a twist that we’ve not seen before in DCS maps so you’re going to want to check this out and see if this works for you. Let’s have a look.

Pre-orders begin, development path laid out

Last week Eagle Dynamics revealed that the early access version of the DCS: Afghanistan map would encompass roughly half of the country and that other sections would be added in later on. Things are actually a bit more complex with this pre-order as the map is actually being offered in three separate sections or as a bundle with everything included.

Available for pre-order today, you can pre-order DCS: Afghanistan or DCS: Southwest Afghanistan. The former will eventually grant you access to a highly detailed experience across the whole of the map while the later will grant you access to a highly detailed rendition of a portion of the map.

This map graphic, shows off three three segments that will ultimately be offered with a Southwest eventually being joined by the North and East.

Why do this? According to Eagle Dynamics, DCS: Afghanistan is the largest and most ambitious that they’ve undertaken to date with 1,449,216 sq km dwarfing DCS: Persian Gulf (200,000 sq km), DCS: Nevada (366,000 sq km) or even DCS: Syria (450,00 sq km). With a bigger map and a bigger effort, the price has naturally gone up so eventually the price for the complete edition will come in at $69.99 USD. The split allows them to sell smaller, though still substantially sized regions, for $29.99 USD each.

Pre-order discounts are in place with the complete map being offered for $48.99 USD while DCS: Southwest Afghanistan being offered for $23.99. Eventually the price on the full map will go up to $59.99 USD during early-access.

Differing reactions

Naturally, any change or price increase is going to be carefully scrutinized by the community and this offer is no different. I have seen some posters saying that they are only interested in a specific area, such as DCS: East with Bagram airbase and surrounding region, and will therefore wait and buy that part of the map when it becomes available later in the year. Others are concerned about the map being sold in components for only slightly cheaper than what a full map cost some years back.

I’ll admit to mixed feelings on this initially and I think what brought it into scope is the scale of this map. It definitely a factor as individual regions are often bigger than some DCS maps previously offered. With the size of the map comes added work by the developers which go into populating each region with details. While some of it is indeed autogenerated (they don’t place individual blades of grass or small stones), quite a bit of work is still needed for hand placed and fine tuned details both big and small.

The other most critical thing for me was multiplayer compatibility and for that we turn to the Eagle Dynamics FAQ. They have wisely chosen to ask and answer a lot of questions that I’m sure they anticipated with this announcement. So, in answer to “Can I Fly with Friends or on Servers if We Have Mismatching Regions of DCS: Afghanistan?” we have:

Yes, you are all flying the same map and will be able to fly together without issue but the detail that each of you sees will differ. Remember that by purchasing individual regions you are curating the areas of the map that you wish to see in high detail. Those who purchase the whole map will see the whole map in high detail as and when each region becomes available and receives updates during the Early Access phase.

DCS: Afghanistan FAQ

And can you fly missions that interact with other areas that you may not have access to? They answer that too with: “How Might Missions and Campaigns Be Affected by the Individual Map Regions?”

If you are flying in a region where you do not have access to the highest level of detail, it may be that the creator of that mission or campaign references a world object you are not able to see. Otherwise, there will be no effect.

DCS: Afghanistan FAQ

The rest of the FAQ answers other key questions about the incoming product so you may want to check that out right here.

I’m curious what your reactions to this are. Will you be buying the map and if so will you be purchasing a specific region or are you interested in having the whole thing? Let me know in the comments!

  1. Wow, talk about a big surprise.

That said, after the initial shock wore off, I lean toward this being a net win for the community.

    1. From what Nineline said on the DCS discord, it sounds like this map will be powered by the same tech they’re using on the Normandy map with the 2.0 addition and that appears to have worked well (i.e. lower detail if you don’t own it, higher detail if you do).
    2. I’m a big fan of lowering the barrier to entry for MP so in that sense, I think this is great. $24 now gets you access to the entire map in a multiplayer server. If you don’t mind lower detail, no big deal.

I caveat all of this by saying I’ll be purchasing the entire map so this isn’t something that will impact me in a big way (or at least that’s how I’m seeing it right now).

  2. I’ll buy the whole map… might as well, because the campaign makers will be doing their magic all over it I guess… however, will this set a precedent?

Will the whole of the Korean map or the Vietnam map follow the same route? (See, I’m being very optimistic here as we all know they will have to do them eventually)… ;)

  3. I’m seeing this a different way, in that it might lead to the ability to fuse together multiple maps into large continuous maps. Given how much of the Middle East we’ve got, I wonder if this could expand into the entire middle east being mapped, with purchased portions being in high detail?

  4. Defintely buying the whole thing when it comes out on Steam. The rollout seems a bit convoluted, another of these boxes inside boxes scenarios like with Normandy 2, but that ended up being a very nice map. Really looking forward to what they do with mountain textures.

Looks like we’ll get the F4 and Afghanistan close to each other. If we get the Phantom in May, that will be the first release in 11 months. That’s some solid downtime.

  5. It’s an interesting approach and certainty has stirred up people over on the ED forums -I personally don’t get the confusion but its not the most straight forward scenery pre-release approach – in saying that, there was a similar approach with Normandy 2.0 in terms of the detail.

I wont be buying the sections and will go with the entire map, However if I was challenged for cash, I might have seriously considered it.

  6. I don’t really like the convoluted purchase options. I think that DCS is already complicated enough as it is with the number of separate products offered.

I could understand this approach if it were used in a REALLY ambitious project, like mapping the entirety of Europe, for example. Afghanistan just isn’t quite at that level.

It does complicate matters a little bit for sure. A bit of work on their webstore, with some nested groupings, might help with communicating the relationship between zones better.

Pesonally, I am okay with the price increase overall, and see the split in multiple packages as a okay option to give users choice. We get more map, and looking at the screenshots, at a perceivable higher quality than even Syria. (The color grading in particular looks for the first time really realistic to me)

Yeah I have to agree for sure. I wasn’t really sure at first but it does seem to be quite a bit more map overall with lower cost choices for those who want only the specific zones.

  8. if they’d bitten off a little more to the east, we’d have had Kashmir as well for some fun hotspot action.

That would be interesting for sure. I know there’s been calls to make sure that a couple of additional out of country airbases make it in… may happen even if the surrounding areas are less detailed.

  9. The size of Nevada and PG does not seem to mean much, being a lot of boring landscape. I am glad I had some ED miles saved up (especial with the upcoming unknown changes to miles), so $33 didn’t seem too bad for the whole map. A 50% discount on the whole map is probably at least a couple years down the road.

That’s a good discount you managed there.

Very curious to see what kind of detailing this map will offer. It’s using all of the latest technology that ED has been developing so it should be really interesting.

  10. its a surprise, and I can (somewhat) understand the new drama.

but it’s not going to cost any more than any other (new) map.

AND it’s Afghanistan, one of the very few places there’s been an IRL sustained air combat campaign in this century.

and despite the nay sayers who are making dismissive comments about it only being a “CAS map” for helicopters and Warthogs, well… You can lead a horse to water, but…

From what I’ve seen so far, it looks to be highly detailed.

i will definitely be buying the entire map.

  11. Zero interest personally. Sure there was sustained operations there for largely US forces but at the end of the day, it was all counter insurgency and nation building. There never was a dog fight. Even when the Soviet’s fought over that piece of desert in the 1980’s. it was practically the same thing. Could one use this to support some sort of broader Red vs. Blue mission? Sure I suppose. But I already own too many maps that don’t get used, and have no interest in yet another map in this region of the world. Syria map also had the same sort of operation, and also can be used to replicate much more interesting conflicts that happened over the years in that region. Much more interest personally in the upcoming northern Europe map from Orbx.

As for their strategy here, I think it’s fair. No effect on me personally, but I get the area is large.

  12. The last few maps have been disappointing for me. SA, Marianas, Sinai, and Normandy are uninstalled. I’ll have to wait for the videos before I take the leap.

That’s quite a diversity of maps that you’ve not had a great feeling with. What is the most common disappointment between them?
