Following the release of the updated version 2 of the BAe 146 airliner that Just Flight created for Microsoft Flight Simulator, its successor, the Avro RJ gets a status update as that project moves towards completion. Here’s the latest!

Liveries, systems, move forward

It’s not quite ready for prime-time yet but Just Flight’s developer team have been busy working on several projects including the Avro RJ. The latest development work has been focused in several different areas including integrating the updates that were made to the 146 Professional into the RJ. The RJ will feature the same version 2 featureset of the 146 which includes cabin crew simulation, boarding simulation, failures, paper charts and checklist, state saving, SimBrief integration, and Navigraph charts support.

Systems work is another big area with the Avro RJ featuring a significant upgraded cockpit that includes an EFIS panel display, a fully automatic pressurization system, engine FADEC system and more. Just Flight reports that systems work is nearly complete with testing on their work coming next. They also report that one area still in progress is the integration of various navigation systems such as the GNLU-910A FMS with the autopilot. Once that work is done they say that VNAV and LNAV modes were be worked on as well.

Finally, the RJ Professional is now up to 30 liveries spread out across the three variants of the airplane. Some of the more colourful and unique examples are shared below.

  1. Hmmmm….

It looks like The Queen’s Flight never upgraded to the RJ, but the RAF apparently flew just a few over the years. Be nice to cruise around the Mach Loop and up to Sumburgh 🙂

They also served in Afghanistan/Bahrain and had some involvement with the Libya strikes in 2011, among quite a bit of globetrotting.

  2. IRL that thing is excruciatingly slow, something like .76 Mach at cruise. On more than one occasion we got stuck behind one of these RJs flying in and out of KMSP.

My employer NWA, had one available for workers to walk through when these first showed up at the affiliated regional carrier (Mesaba). A ramper (bag smasher) was impressed that it had four engines, he said it must be a fast and powerful airplane. I shook my head and explained it had four engines because those were four puny motors powered by hamsters.

Friends don’t let friends fly Avro RJ85s.

    1. Fair enough!

I like it for the stuff it can do that other ‘liners can’t, like the short/rough field ops, etc.

And it just has a TON of distinctive character – i.e., it looks cool.

Since I’m not an airline and don’t pay for Ops, that’s all good enough for me 🙂

Haha as always I love these stories! All four RJ hamsters must work hard to get to cruise I imagine 😄
