We’ve got some good news and some bad news for DCS World fans. Kola winter scenery images have been released along with the feature list and updates for the map, Afghanistan’s detailed area is growing a bit, and the DCS: CH-47F has been delayed.

Chinook delayed

I think a few of you in the comments section here may have called it a few weeks ago. DCS: CH-47F has been delayed. Here’s the statement made earlier today on the DCS World Discord server by Community Manager NineLine.

Dear All, due to a number of unresolved issues we have decided to delay the release of the DCS: CH-47F. We will keep you informed on a timely basis and look forward to bringing you this iconic aircraft very soon. With this delay we will also be able to bring you a series of instructional videos. Please accept our sincere apologies for the delay. Thank you for your understanding. Please Note: The upcoming patch will release without the CH-47.

In some ways this did not come as surprise as Eagle Dynamics typically produces videos and releases a great deal of information ahead of the module’s release. An information series detailing some of the systems of the module usually comes and sometimes content creators get an early look at it too. We haven’t seen that yet and there’s been a little bit of a shortage in fanfare around the module’s release.

It looks like the delay will let Eagle Dynamics work on some issues with the module and perhaps get us some training materials out before the module releases.

Orbx shows off new winter images for DCS: Kola

Over in the Orbx Discord community we got a sneak peek at the DCS: Kola update that will bring winter imagery to the map. So far we have the summer version but now we’ll be seeing what the area looks like in the low arctic sun.

The update was intended to release fairly quickly post DCS: Kola launch and it appears that Orbx is ready to go pending the next DCS World update (which should come tomorrow).

Here are some features that they have listed with the update:

FEATURES:

  • Complete set of (dynamic) Winter textures
  • Inclusion of SAM sites: Phase 1 – setting up the clearings
  • General focus Northern Finland & North East Norway (added more towns and villages)
  • Military Installations – Phase 1 of the Russia/Finland boundary complete
  • Border clearing, revetments development and inclusion
  • Norway: Port of Kirkenes near ENKR
  • Vector Data: Additional infrastructure added around the map

OPTIMISATION & BUG FIXES:

  • Optimisation pass on surface mesh
  • Polyarny water depth
  • Tree revisions (type, density & distribution) in focus area: various fixes
  • Updated hard splat arrays to Splatmap 5.2
  • Corrected wind turbines Z placements (now visible)

Meanwhile Afghanistan grows a bit

We’ve learned through an update on the DCS: Afghanistan FAQ that the map is being slightly reconfigured and there will be an overall increase in the high detail zone for the map. It also looks like the reconfiguration ensures that people who buy high detail areas within just one zone will have an overall increase in area too with the eastern section gaining quite a bit of extra area. The overlaps for critical airbases meanwhile will stay essentially the same.

The FAQ also includes clarifications on what happens to people who own just a section of the map.

Once the entire map is complete and if you only own 1 section, you will see the entire map, and the airfields in those unpurchased sections will be there and usable in the sim, including the ME. You will still see trees and buildings in these areas as well but in low-detail LODs.

Always good to know how the map is going to work for people who do and don’t have the detailed areas.

  1. Whilst I’m not a first day purchaser of the CH-47F (though I will get it at some point) its good to see that they have taken onboard some of the communities feedback (not quite a F-16 launch but missing a bit nonetheless)

Great to see the winter textures for the Kola map – I’m still enjoying flying missions on that map (using Briefing Room to generate the missions).

Next patch should be a good one – looking forward to the Super Carriers update

  2. Bummed out about the CH-47, that’s at the top of my list along with the C-130. (I’d trade the Phantom for either.) But the Kola update looks great. I guess we’re still getting Halfghanistan tomorrow, that will be cool.

It is a bummer! I was wondering where the videos and other marketing stuff was… made me not so surprised for the delay.

  3. i must say I’m getting sick of ED they constantly give dates and then fail to come through on them … i have been looking forward to this module since last year. But the biggest problem i see is they constantly say hey there’s a delay … ok so what then when the new date comes around the announce the day before its another delay …… but no timeline now… so they probably knew when they delayed a week that it was not going to be ready in time and should have just said two.. im starting to question their business ethics at this point i have lost a lot if not most of my trust in ED because of this.

  4. also right before a long holiday weekend for a lot of people while i know a good number don’t celebrate i wonder how long it may or may not effect the release date… either way I’m strait up Angry at this. ED has a track record and I’m sick of trying to chuckle at 2 more weeks.

Well they already missed my long weekend holiday.

I do wish they’d announced the delay much earlier.

The degree of negativity and toxicity that some of the DCS community has developed is comical. Release the CH-47 and there’s some aspect that someone thinks is incomplete? Riot in the streets! The CH-47 is delayed? Riot in the streets! ED is far from perfect, to be sure, but it’s easy to forget how bereft of flight sims we were say around 2010 and how amazing the technology is in DCS compared to what we all grew up with. Flying through the treetops at night, at Mach 2, in virtual reality, in a Tomcat? That’s what we all dreamed of as we squinted at our 320×200 CGA flight sims in the 80s and 90s. I think a lot of the community needs to be reminded there’s an actual fun flight simulation that works and that you can all go play anytime, instead of just spending all our time on the internet screaming about how terrible ED is for delaying the most realistic simulation ever of a legendary aircraft by a few weeks. I’m sure no one will agree with me and the screaming will continue, because internet.

These days the temperature has definitely felt like it has been turned up. I’d love a bit of calm but that seems to not be in the cards.

      Still, I hope!

  7. The main problem with CH-47 is not being a combat helicopter. I will wait and see if ED will prepare some interesting missions for Chinook.

    All looks good to me.

    I pre-ordered both the Chinook and Afghanistan-Full.

Chinook isn’t much of a surprise to be late. I still cannot for the life of me understand the drama over a delayed release. E.g., look how delayed HB’s Tomcat & Phantom were. And NOBODY talks about that any more…

Good to see adjustments being made to AFG. Looking forward to that second only to progress on Kola.

Now if we could just get them to make a v2 of NTTR, life would be good 🙂

  9. The problem is a self inflicted one. It’s easy to just blame entitled internet people loving to complain but the reality is, they are paying customers. ED loves that pre-order money which is the root of the problem. Pre-selling a product comes with an expectation at least a reasonable expectation. There is nothing stopping ED from being like other game companies and saying, “it’s ready when it’s ready”, but no they give false dates to lure pre-orders and increase hype. I think most people suspected something was not right with the launch of the Chinook and it was about to become another F16 launch. Again, there is a lot of tension and mistrust right now due to other issues. This to me is just another self imposed misstep that shouldn’t have happened. Two delays in a row announced the day before release looks pretty unprofessional and now no window..lol.

I think you’ve got a good connection point between the pre oder and the late announcement of the delay. I think if we had no pre order yet and it wasn’t the day before things would be calmer. There’s alway some complaint but the two together plus recent issues do make for yet another firestorm.

The delay in itself doesn’t bother me in the slightest. Software development is not always (or often) a straight line at complexity levels like this.

Selfishly, I haven’t even gotten to the Kiowa yet so more time before the next thing comes out is ok.

  10. Officially delayed AGAIN with what is now the 3rd delay and no new date, just wait for the newsletter on Friday. I’m sorry this is truly unprofessional and ED should be embarrassed! I’m sure they’re laughing it up on the Razbam Discord.

  11. […] DCS 2.9.6.57650 is now out with three new campaigns, the Afghanistan map, Flaming Cliffs 2024 and plenty of updates. The latest version is not without a bit of controversy as the update was delayed and some of the content in it was delayed even further. We knew last week that the CH-47 was going to be delayed beyond this latest update but just in-case you didn’t see that, DCS: CH-47F will need some more time cooking before its ready to go. […]
