Developer Diary 6 for IL-2 Korea is out and 1CGS are talking about their pilot model including some interesting new interactive elements.

The pilot is your character

The 1CGS have revealed a few new features for IL-2 Korea today and they are all focused on the pilot as a character that you interact with the world.

One of the new features is the pilot’s body will be integrated into the cockpit and interact with some of the elements in there (including the throttle as shown off by the video). This is an optional feature because I know the community is somewhat divided on this as a feature – but I can see why VR pilots in particular don’t want to be just a floating head and would like to feel “attached” to something.

Another feature is the ability to get out of the plane and get back in. Again, this one has been a dividing point of interest with some wanting the feature and others not being at all interested in it. I think it’s got some potential to open up interesting immersive possibilities. They mention the ability to walk, run, swim, and move from one aircraft to another aircraft or vehicle.

At the very least I can see some immersive sequences where you could walk from the briefing room to a jeep, then to your plane. Another example could be a search and rescue mission where a downed pilot hops into a waiting helicopter. One friend suggested that they’d be all for bailing out near and enemy base and sneaking into a waiting airplane. I wonder where that idea came from! There are possibilities!

More seriously, they mention that the way the pilot exits the airplane is all programmed for in flight, on the ground, in a negative G situation, ejection, or after an emergency landing as you can see in the video.

Sidenote on the video: There are clearly some new sound effects at play and they are chunky and satisfying.

  3. Just to make sure IL-2 Korea will not have a clickable cockpit, right? I just saw the mouse icon and I assumed maybe it indicated that IL-2 Korea will have a clickable cockpit.

So far as we know, yeah they have elected to stay away from clickable cockpits. I think the mouse icon is just their game in a kind of debugging mode.

  4. Having a full body is actually not that great in VR. You see ‘your’ arms do things that you are not actually doing in real life, especially since full body tracking is very rare among VR users. And the software doesn’t implement accurate human physics, so your arms/wrists can do impossible things as well.

This is why you often see disembodied hands in VR, because the controller tracking is fairly reliable, so they just show that. But for flight simming, you don’t use the controllers. So turning the entire body off is probably better for VR.

Some folks tell me its extremely disconcerting to look down in VR and not have a body. I have to take that on faith because I really can’t do VR myself unfortunately. Your experience may vary no doubt!

A pilot character that you can control is definitely an interesting feature to explore and could open up new ways of playing the game.

It will be interesting to see how it works out in MSFS 2024 when that releases.

  6. Ace of thunder (VR only) also showcased somethng similar weeks ago in trailer, pilot walking around airplane, but it seams they can control hands movment of player with VR controlers, in this and that game i wonder how will they go around problem that we as players can press many buttons at same time, real pilots could not, so how will hands or legs move acordingly i dont know.

  7. I, for one, am all for a body in the cockpit. I fly only in VR and I don’t like being a ghost before my time! Since I usually keep one hand on the stick and one on the throttle, it shouldn’t be too hard to track. But we’ll see. Also, I remember one of the devs in an early video wanting VR gloves to track hands; maybe someday.
