Eagle Dynamics has released into early access the DCS: CH-47F Chinook helicopter. The aircraft is available as part of an update that just came out for the sim. Let’s have a look at the release.

Chinook release

The Chinook heavy-lift helicopter is here for DCS World. Or at least in early access anyways. The Ch-47F is a modern iteration of the classic twin rotor helicopter that comes with modern digital avionics, the usual high resolution textures and PBR materials, AI-based side gunners, base multi-crew functionality, single point sling loading, cargo load and unload, and support for DCS World’s new warehouse cargo transfer feature.

Additional features are planned for post launch with additional avionics, multi-point sling loading systems and more.

The CH-47F road to release has been a bit rocky with some delays along the way but hopefully this early access release is adequate to get us started with this type of flying in DCS World. I’ll be looking into that as soon as I can.

The aircraft is available for early access purchase on the DCS World e-Shop for a discounted $55.99 USD. Once fully released, it will go up to $69.99 USD. It’s not currently available on the Steam Store but I anticipate that it will appear there any day now.

  1. […] big news, that I covered yesterday, was the release of the DCS: CH-47F into early access. A host of other modules saw updates from the F/A-18 to the F-14, F-16, AH-64, […]

  2. I flew it in a few Instant Action missions yesterday.

Looks great, sounds great, flies great. Fast, powerful, and yes: easy to fly (for a helicopter). Very good sense of flying a large, heavy helo.

It handles a lot like a really big Ka-50 BlackShark with the flight director off, which IMHO is a Good Thing.

Trim system works just like every other helo in the game, so no problems there. I’m no Chinook expert, so I don’t know what the future trim system will bring.

Basically, other than the lack of forward firing armament (which is true to life), it’s like flying a REALLY fast Huey with a glass cockpit.

In terms of Early Access missing features, yeah there’s a bunch of that. No different from Apache on EA Day 1.

But what’s there now seems to work well enough – i’m having fun with it. Can see giving it a good amount of use running logistics in MP servers. 🙂
