We’ve got some interesting DCS World news this weekend with a texture update for Kola, an end of summer sale, and a new mission generator feature announcement. Let’s have a look at it all!

Kola map texture update

An interesting development for DCS: Kola has just been announced with revamped textures for the summer version of the map which are slated to arrive in the next update. They report that all summer textures have been replaced with more refined images. They are being generated with a “custom script” that combine multiple sources including satellite and aerial photography. Reportedly, this will improve the look of the map at lower altitudes although the images we’ve seen so far have still been at medium altitudes so we’ll have to wait and see.

Other content added includes EFKS Kuusamo Airport and EFIV Ivalo Airport along with various new towns and cities. Colours at XLMV Severomorsk-3 Naval Air Base, UMOE Monchegorsk and ULAK Severomorsk-1 have also reportedly been updated and ESNJ Jokkmokk has been reworked. We’ll have to wait and see how this all looks when it arrives.

IAG – Instant Action Generator

This is an interesting one. DCS World’s instant mission generator is pretty long in the tooth and I’ve long thought than an IL-2 style advanced quick mission builder would be a much preferred style of mission generation for DCS. It looks like they are doing something along those lines with their new IAG.

The primary objective of the IAG is to allow more mission content in an easy-to-use interface. Missions can range from simple dogfights, to bomber escorts, to close air support missions, and much more. The IAG allows you to choose your aircraft, map, and mission type, hostile forces, and then tune the mission generation with more detailed variables.

It will reportedly support all eras of combat aviation and work with all aircraft and maps. Most importantly, this is a free core update to DCS World.

That all sounds pretty good and I look forward to trying it out.

End of summer sale

In the northern hemisphere you may be cheering on or lamenting the end of the summer season but one way or another it’s happening and Eagle Dynamics is using that as the theme of their next big sale. Up to 50% off most modules is on offer with many of the series’ classic releases getting the 50% off treatment. Even the Mi-24P Hind is available for 50% off.

Meanwhile, some other releases like the F-16C, F/A-18C, JF-17, AH-64D, and MB-339 have a 30% off price. The DCS: F-14 Tomcat gets its own price bracket at 35% off.

Several modules are not on sale including the recently released DCS: F-4E Phantom, OH-58D Kiowa, CH-47F Chinook, and several recent campaign releases as well. And of course the RAZBAM modules are not on sale no doubt owning to the ongoing dispute there.

The sale is already underway on the DCS World E-Shop and will go until the 30th of September at 15:00 GMT. Steam is also about to start up the Planes, Trains and Automobiles fest starting on the 16th of September and DCS World will be participating in that sale as well.

  1. good to see the Kola map getting some updates, clearly they are listening to the feedback (personally I don’t mind what there is at the moment).

IAG – be interesting to see what they pull together with this. I’ve been using the Briefing Room 3rd party app for creating missions and then modifying it in DCS web editor and that works well. I suspect IAG won’t replace Briefing room as that has a lot of functionality and includes a good range of mod integrations (IADS)

    1. I’m really happy to see Kola improve as well. Looking forward to checking it out right down at treetop level and seeing what that experience is like.

Briefing Room definitely will have an important place in the mix but also good to see that they are solving some core fundamental gaps in the DCS “game” experience by introducing this.

  2. Really looking forward to the Kola update. Seems to be taking much longer than expected, I think they planned on having it out in August. Should be great though. Beautiful textures in the pics you posted.

  3. Question. Where do you think Eagle Dynamics will go after they have completed Iraq and Afghanistan? I recon that they could go to Korea (1950-53 and present versions), Vietnam, or Taiwan. Those are my best bets. I might be way off though.

    1. Maybe! They’ve been reluctant to do a Vietnam map despite lots of requests for one so… we’ll see!

The next one is a Germany map. Unclear if it’s a modern map or they are doing something set during the Cold War but I expect that will be fully revealed then.

      1. That’s a good one. Do you reckon we will ever see a Ukraine map? Or would it be too controversial to do?

      2. They removed Crimea from the LOMAC era map. There’s no chance of a Ukraine map.

      3. Good point.

I think a Cold War Germany map would be intriguing. A scenario where the Cold War tensions between NATO and the Warsaw Pact reached its boiling point.

  4. Glad about the instant action generator!

Maybe it can be adapted to create what’s keeping me away from flight sims: A rogue lite game mode that you can hop in, play a quick session, and hop out again to deal with life, while progressing in the game despite the short play sessions.

  5. The instant action generator is a good idea, but what can be more satisfying than creation a complex scenario in the Mission Editor? I found the ME worth every hour spent on learning and discovering its features and tricks. Anyway, if Instant Action Generator will allow to save the mission as “miz” file, maybe we will be able to open it in the ME and take care of details?
