The folks at BlackBox Simulations have just released their latest take on the Britten-Norman Islander for Microsoft Flight Simulator with a new modernized turbine engine variant – the BN-2T. This one comes with some interesting additional equipment so lets have a look!

Ready for missions, passengers

The BN-2 Islander as an aircraft has had a lengthy service life first flying in 1965 and happens to find itself still in production in the modern day. This light utility aircraft has developed into all kinds of different variants and BlackBox Simulations, having done the earlier BN-2B, are now releasing a turboprop variant. This one is particularly interesting as its an aircraft developed with various missionized packages. There are three major variants and six sub variants included in the package that include Civilian, Maritime, Special Mission, Defender Military & Police, Airborne Early Warning ASTOR concept.

There are 24 liveries, a collection of under wing stores that include cameras and search and rescue pods, as well as Garmin GI275 ADI & HSI paired with Garmin GMC 500 Flight director and Autopilot system. The aircraft requires the PMS50 GTN750 in either free or paid variations to work.

The aircraft is available for purchase through the company website for €34.99. It should also eventually make its way to the Marketplace as with the company’s other aircraft.

  1. Anyone remember when Blackbox was known as PSS, when they shafted all of their customers, removed download links, shuttered their website, and moved to Malta to avoid EU sanctions? Remember after they rebranded to Blackbox when they released their Airbus A318, A319, A320, A321, A330, and A340 series and never finished them?

    I remember. Pepperidge Farm remembers.

    1. I don’t know their history. Interesting. Are they the same bunch as they used to be? Lots of changes in the industry over the years.

      1. Yeah, more or less. They emptied the company bank accounts, shuttered the website, the downloads, and absconded to Malta where EU regulations were never enforced and banking restrictions nonexistent, at least at the time. No idea about now.

PSS, the company they were previously know as, were highly regarded in the FS02/FSX community as one of the top third-party dev’s around with some of the most realistic (study-level) aircraft available. Then for whatever reason they pulled this stunt. Likely because they were broke. That said, what they didn’t take with them were the talented developers that made PSS so popular, which was evident by their rebranded, trash products.

It was more or less two very amateurish idiots doing everything, releasing unfinished (six of them) EA projects that stayed that way for nearly a decade. Just going off the screens posted above, I suspect nothing has changed cause’ it looks fugly as hell. It looks worse than a first timer’s FSX freeware project.

        But it does looke BBX…

      2. Who knows, maybe things have changed for the better. I don’t personally know the story but I do know they worked pretty hard on their BN-2B Islander releasing a V2 version after an initially lukewarm reception on the first. It has good reviews… I do want to try it and compare it versus the one I have in XP12. Waiting until after MSFS 2024 settles down!
