We’ve got some juicy Combat Pilot news! The sim is opening up a Patreon option for dedicated fans who want to support the project monetarily and receive bonus behind the scenes content in return. At the same time, we’re learning more about the goal for Combat Pilot to begin offering playable experiences early on. Then, finally, we have the surprise announcement of a B-17 Flying Fortress that the developers intend to build into a separately released module that complements the rest of Combat Pilot. Here’s the news!

Updated: Added links to the new store and a new video also released!

Laying down the groundwork

Since its announcement over a year and a half go, Combat Pilot has given us a series of developer updates showing off various work in progress assets and talking about some of the plans for the sim. One of the things that Executive Producer Jason Williams, a long time industry veteran, made clear right from the get go was that they were keen to start initial offerings as quickly as they could. Keeping in mind of course that starting a new combat flight sim from scratch against competitors that have 20+ year histories was going to be a challenge.

We’re inching towards that goal of an initial offering with a new video released by the team today. The video includes a roadmap of what they intend to offer in the coming months and years.

That will start with Carrier Qualifications which will not have a combat portion but will introduce aircraft and aircraft carriers. That will be followed by Air Combat which will introduce combat elements into the sim, Naval Warfare which will bring ships into the battle, and then culminate in a completed module called Midway Invasion.

After all of that has been completed, the team have future plans to then take the sim to the battles in the Solomon islands. Fighting in “The Slot” and at Guadalcanal were pivotal battles fought in the aftermath of Midway so having them tackle that after would let them draw on already created content and expand it outwards.

Patreon announcement

The other announcement is that Combat Pilot is now offering up a Patreon option for dedicated fans interested in financially backing the project. Patreon supporters will, varying by different tiers, gain access to exclusive behind the scenes content.

Users at the highest tier, a $25 a month commitment, will even be able to experience a test run of the software similar to what was on offer at FSExpo with some slight refinements. I should say that though I was very impressed by what I saw at the Expo, its no where near a refined experience so keep your expectations suitably adjusted. Still, if you have the ability and desire to support the product at that level it’s certainly a nice perk.

And of course Patreon is not a necessary thing at all, however, I know some diehard fans are looking to back the project and getting a combat flight sim project started from the ground up like this is costly and time consuming.

B-17 surprise

The last bit of the video contains a surprise announcement of a planned addition to the sim. A B-17! This is looking to be on offer in a similar vein as a Collector Plane in the IL-2 series as a separate future purchase. The B-17 model Jason reports is not theirs and was purchased to be part of the sim and that more details will come as to how this is all going to happen. Still, what we saw was a more or less something close to a complete 3D model of both interior and exterior.

As much as this project is probably even further afield from the Midway content itself, announcing this now is also something of a statement that Combat Pilot seeks to offer up experiences for a variety of combat flight simmers and that it won’t be a fighter pilot only sim. Bombers, torpedo bombers, dive bombers, are certainly on offer. Even recce aircraft like the Catalina have been discussed.

Combat Pilot in action video

I missed this yesterday but the team have put together a short cinematic showing off some graphical elements from Combat Pilot. Folding wings, carriers, flying around, clouds, and different lighting. Check it out!

The store is now available too

The Combat Pilot store is now up and running too with a link to their Patreon and they have a 2025 Calendar available for purchase as well. Check it out here!

  1. As much as I am excited that Combat pilot is going to cover Midway and the Solomon Islands, I am also a little bit disappointed that IL-2 isn’t likely going to go there. Midway and Guadalcanal were really popular maps and are (i think) are really iconic IL-2 maps. Nevertheless I am happy that the Battle of Midway and the Solomon Islands campaign are getting a representation in modern combat flight simulation at all, because I think that the Pacific in general (along with many other places but I won’t get into too much detail) is well overdue for an updated representation. On an even brighter note, even though IL-2 will be a fierce competitor to Combat Pilot, together, they could work together to cover more battles and campaigns of WWII. Or if Combat Pilot planes could acquire clickable cockpits while planes in IL-2 could maintain simplified ones, like in Great Battles, both could do Midway and the Solomon Islands while one appeals to people who prefer a combat flight sims with clickable cockpits and one would appeal to combat flight sims with simplified cockpits. What do you make of this?

    1. The GBs Battle of Midway was intended to have mainly carrier borne aircraft, the Pete, and maybe a PBY or flyable B-26; a flyable B-17 would not be in the plans. The planeset would very likely be less than flyable 10 planes. Based on how Jason has been treated by 1CGS, I have more faith in CP than their Pacific plans. Jason listens to the community and knows what places and aircraft are most appealing to flight simmers. Lastly, although I like clickable cockpits, given how much work is required even if you don’t take the DCS approach and how many features for GBs didn’t come about like Drop Tanks, Radio Comms, etc., I’d put them at a low priority.

    2. Big ships with many AAA guns would never work in GB.

      1. Yeah, that game has definitely shown it’s limitations when building vehicles and terrain for it. Hopefully this new generation of IL-2, as well as Combat Pilot will demonstrate how far things have come so they could have ships with hundreds of anti aircraft guns on them.

  2. A Patreon option usually indicates they can’t fund their own project and are seeking funding from anywhere they can get it.

I can count on a dozen hands over the number very promising similar niche projects (FPS, FS, Tac Shooters, Mil-Sims etc) that moved in this direction and on four fingers the ones that are still going. Of those only two are in active development with the other two having gone radio silent.

The whole Patreon thing is always a red flag for me. When developers start asking for donations, I take a long, long step back.

Sometimes it does. In this case it’s always been on the radar so it’s not a change in course but “part of the plan” so to speak. They have partial funding and Jason was clear with us on day 1 of the announcement. The move is also the result of a considerable number of folks in the community asking for the opportunity to do this. Jason’s typically been responsive to those things.

That all said, starting up a new combat flight sim when competitors have been in the market for a couple of decades and the market is niche is hard. It’s doable but this next little while is going to be critical for the success of the project. Hopefully they pull it off. I can’t see the Patreon being for everyone.

      1. I think the crowdfunding model in this genre is somewhat poisoned by the failed DCS WWII Kickstarter, which some people still haven’t forgotten.

  3. So if we sign up for Patreon, is the expectation that we’d still have to buy the game when it releases? That’d be rather a big fat, “Nope” for me.

    1. You would have to purchase the things that come out later. There’s perks but the game content itself isn’t one of those things.

That said, the message is pretty clear from some core members of the Combat Pilot community that they wanted this and were willing to chip in to support development. The opportunity is there for folks who want it. I like too that they’ve also offered something tangible, the calendar, as another support option.

For everyone else. Hold on to your cash and wait for the actual product.

    2. Good point. I remember that. But they did make good I get the 3 aircraft I paid for I believe and the map eventually. That was around the time of Star Citizen starting out and Kickstarting games was all the rage.

  4. I like they have some sort of roadmap. This might help manage expectations.

The Patreon part is not for me. I lean more towards early access where I can decide for myself if the current state is enough for me to enjoy (just in case).
