A new map is coming up soon for DCS World with DCS: Iraq aiming to release sometime before the end of the year. A pre-order is available and, as with DCS: Afghanistan, its available in a complete package or in discrete parts depending on your preference and pricing range. Reflected Simulations has also shared news about a new Red Flag campaign coming to DCS and Goldwolf has just released the latest version of the DCS Beginners Guide. Let’s have a look!

Iraq pre-order

Another of DCS World’s previously announced maps is moving into pre-order status with official launch planned for sometime “soon.” Following the pattern established with Afghanistan, DCS: Iraq is coming in a multi-part release with core features and zones available on launch and additional zones and features coming post launch.

DCS: Iraq will have a complete package, a DCS: North Iraq version and a DCS: South Iraq version. North Iraq is coming as part of early access with areas modeled including Baghdad, Kirkuk, and Sulaymaniyah. Air bases will include Al Asad, Balad, and Baghdad International.

DCS: South Iraq is slated for release in 2025 adding Basrah, Najaf, Amarah, Nasiriyah, and the Shatt al-Arab waterways. It will also cover Kuwait, Bahrain, and much of Saudi Arabia.

Purchasing only the North or South versions will still grant you access to the entire map but some zones will be displayed in a lower detail level.

Eagle Dynamics reports the map is currently undergoing performance optimization, multiplayer testing, and a community feedback process. The goal is a smooth Day 1 launch.

The pre-purchase price of the map will be $48.99 USD with a $69.99 USD regular price on launch. The e-Shop page for DCS: Iraq has opened up on the Eagle Dynamics DCS World website.

Red Flag 81-2 Campaign for the DCS F-4E Phantom

Reflected Simulations has announced the next campaign project for DCS World is “Red Flag 81-2” for DCS: F-4E Phantom. As with prior releases, this campaign will come packaged with period correct maps, charts, dynamic debrief, interactive checklists, hand signals, formation signals, and study level realism on display in other Reflected Simulations campaigns.

The campaign is slated to be 13 missions long and will feature a variety of aircraft operating together in this Red Flag scenario based on real world information and notes. Reflected has made sure to include most of the squadrons (with appropriate liveries) that took part using a few stand-ins (F-15Cs instead of F-15As and Tornadoes instead of Jaguars) where necessary.

DCS Beginner Guide

If you’re just getting into DCS World or need a quick refresher, a new guide is available from Goldwolf, a community member who has spent the last couple of years writing and refining this guide. The latest edition of the guide has reached version 3 and it aims to be an all encompassing guide covering modules, hardware configuration, software configuration and even server suggestions.

Goldwolf shared the guide in several locations including in this community post on the r/Hoggit group. The guide itself can be downloaded on the DCS World User Files database.

  1. If I buy the Iraq map I will officially need more storage. My 1TB “DCS only” NVME is closing in on the minimum 10% free space I want to have. So it’s not just the map, it’s also the $200 for a new 2TB NVME.

The things we do for flightsims… 🙂

Yeah this is my challenge these days too. I also have a drive dedicated to DCS and I’ve had to delete stuff just to get patches in these days. It’s getting to be a bit much ☺️

  2. Enigma just came out with a new video about DCS, is it too big to fail. Raises some very good points.

I watched it yesterday when it came out. Enjoyed the discussion with Enigma on it and what is a nuanced take on the combat sim market.

  3. They need to firstly finish the stuff they’ve already started, Second, and most importantly, need to update F15E. I’m not paying for anything until F15 gets finished. I paid a lot of money for it and I’m not ok with how we’ve been treated. I don’t care about the drama, I care about not being treated like trash. They need us, we don’t need them

    1. Since I’m new this year to DCS, it was seeing Afghanistan come out (which I bought), and now having Iraq come out a couple months later that made me decide no more. They say they are separate teams, but since they are both working on terrain, it seems they have spread their people too thin. I don’t understand why they can’t have both those teams working together to get one finished, or at least have all parts nearing completion, before moving on to another. It feels like a pyramid scheme to me at this point. I’m embarrassed to say how much I spent on DCS. I’m right there with all the long time users who now have to move from a 1TB drive to a 2TB. Wish I never got into DCS at all, but I let FOMO get the best of me in the last couple sales. To be clear, it’s not the product itself that has me ticked off, it’s the way they run the company that has me regretting my purchase.

      1. The business side of flight simming is… a bit wild to say the least. This year has felt a bit more chaotic than most but that’s kind of always been the case. Especially with DCS. Usually it works out in the end (but on occasion it hasn’t).

If you just got Afghanistan and you’re having fun flying over that map. I’d say there’s no need to rush into this one. There’s great potential scenarios for both as well as the other maps.

I’m personally enjoying Kola a fair bit despite its still early access release. It is coming along thankfully.

      2. It’s a never ending cycle of new products driven by people wanting more and more. I see ED have responded to what a lot of people had been asking for but its come about in a way that also frustrates its customers (EA that runs for years). I’m not excusing that they are taking full advantage of it but the customer bases responses (willingness to buy EA) has contributed to the situation.

I remember the times when there was just one map, Flaming Cliffs aircraft and then there was the first study level a/c. Felt so much simpler then – its kind of like the video streaming services: I often spend more time trying to work out what to watch over watching (I’m exaggerating a bit but you get the point).

Thankfully with the F-4 release I’ve just focused on the one aircraft and limited maps

IMHO that’s a good strategy to focus. I’m spread really thin trying to cover a lot of content but even then I’m trying to tell myself to just fly a small handful and really get to know and enjoy.

The trifecta for me was Hornet, Persian Gulf, and Supercarrier. And then Raven One using all three. And as much as Supercarrier is still not finished several years out from launch… the experience has still been great. Those three together provided me with a ton of entertainment.

Right now it’s Phantom and Mirage F1 soaking up my DCS time. I want to get more on the CH-47 but I’m waiting a bit for some more development to happen there.

    2. Sadly, this is an unrealistic expectation at this point. F15e was the R-word. And they’re not coming back.

Best we can hope for is that ED maintains the F15E in a flyable state. Since it’s unlikely they have to code, it’s unlikely they are able to finish it even if they wanted to.

      that’s the reality of it.

should we boycott an entire game that has no alternative over this? I personally don’t think so.

      1. and that’s the catch 22 isn’t it – we want a study sim, we may not like everything about how its been run – but there’s not another real option (I know some might disagree with that)

    3. You can refund it right now if you bought it direct from ED. Steam is more of an issue, but doable with persistence.

FWIW, I’m keeping mine until it stops working.

  4. I would say there is. its the F4 BMS. but … there is limited number of hi-fi modules just F-16 and F-15.

so in case we want more (what can be the main gripe at the same time ie. more but not finished) and in case we want better graphics (again the gripe about graphics vs core functions) we have to choose DCS.

so the question is what we really want.

    1. honestly, I couldn’t get over the bad sound effects, back graphics, and no helicopters.

BMS did a great job modeling the F16, but there are other aspects that detract from immersion for me.

      1. I’m increasingly curious where Falcon 5.0 will find itself in the marketplace. Especially if they can deliver on some of the immersion that 4.0 is missing in modern times.
