A small update from Team Fusion Simulations yesterday is showcasing use of the new SpeedTree technology for IL-2 Sturmovik: Cliffs of Dover series. There’s also a small mention of work going on with VR Beta that I know is highly anticipated by some dedicated VR users. Let’s have a look!
New tree tech

Team Fusion is currently implementing SpeedTree 8.42 into the Cliffs of Dover series. The update replaces the current trees and other vegetation with the popular SpeedTree system which is in use with quite a few different simulators and games.
Among the updates are replacement of older tree objects with new ones and with more variety than previously available. The new system also supports hedgerows so some trees have been replaced on the map with these instead for even more realism. The objects all support 4K textures and PBR (physics based rendering) so they should look more realistic and blend in better with the surrounding scenery too.
All of this is still in alpha so lots of development work is on-going and the addition of grasses, rocks, and other details is yet to be done.
A quick VR update
Additionally, there’s a small mention on how the VR beta is going. VR beta users have been reporting crashes and at this point the team appears to be looking to narrow down the source of the crashes. TrueSky, a technology for rendering the atmosphere and clouds, may be a possible source or it may be something else.
Regarding VR… we are analyzing the data from the latest VR Beta releases… which were created to identify and isolate the sources of the crashes which have been experienced by users.
Hopefully those issues can be sorted out.
