It’s a bit hard for me to believe but it has been 10-years since the launch of IL-2 Great Battles. The release of the launch version of IL-2 Sturmovik: Battle of Stalingrad occurred on October 22nd, 2014. The series has been growing since then and 1C Game Studios is marking the anniversary with a giveaway. Here are the details!

Giveaway prize underway

The Battle of Stalingrad launch trailer was more cinematic than gameplay, but it did launch the sim!

Launched into early access in November of 2013 and then reaching release status on October 22nd, 2014, it’s been a long road for the IL-2 Sturmovik: Great Battles Series. What started with Battle of Stalingrad featuring just 10-aircraft, has now expanded to almost a dozen different titles and around 100-flyable aircraft and drivable tanks too.

A giveaway is being offered with 10-keys being given away to a module or collectible aircraft of your choice. To do that, they are asking people to like and share the link to their social media page on Facebook. If that’s your thing and you want a chance to win one of the ten keys, check out the details here.

  1. It’s been a good run and it’s not completely over, with FC4 and the fan-made module still coming.

Let’s hope that the new engine will set them up for another 10 years of modules.

    1. Based on what they’ve shown so far with Korea, I don’t think they’ll have any problem selling that new addition/edition 🙂

I do hope they expand the early jet age conflicts, AND I’d love to see them move to PTO and non-ETO areas for future WW2.

  2. I hope more third-party modules will come along in the future, beyond Karelia and Odessa, and if they do, I think that most (if not all) of these hypothetical fan-made maps will centered around major battles on the Eastern Front. There are so many scenarios to choose from to choose from (though I’ll spare you the list) and we already have aircraft that can be utilized for pilot career and advanced quick mission builder over multiple maps. What do you think of this?

    1. It’s a clearly a trend that more and more games do have official DLC’s from 3th parties (paid or free) under the supervision from the game publisher, after it’s full release. I assume, the big advantage is that an aged game like BoX, when being abandon by the developers and with a new successor at full steam, is hopefully still under the attention to potential unknown buyers.

    2. Totally support this idea.

      It’s a win/win/win for everyone!

  3. Since they parted ways with Jason, the forums are really quite dead compared to before. That with the limited communication from the team and the new Korea sim, seems they are just trying to milk the last pennies

    1. Jason seemed to really enjoy banning people who held opinions outside of his own.

Not exactly the most pleasant person TBH

    2. I don’t frequent those forums, but I would think that most attention is going to Korea.

And since it’s not yet released, there’s not a lot to talk about that hasn’t already been said. 🙂

Once Korea comes out, it’ll pick back up again, and I’d be shocked if they didn’t come out with a reprise of one of the BoX titles on the new engine at some point. Might be awhile, tho, depends on how much effort it would be to re-build a BoX edition to the new model vs the revenue potential of “just a port”.

  4. its sad to see how things went backwords since glory days of IL-2, i do hope they get serious redesine of mission maker and profesional working only on AI behavior in their next game, 10 years is long time for so little. Selling airplanes separatly makes game devs just focus on making next new airplane and neglect rest as it dont pay the bills.

    1. WOW!

I remember looking into flight sim back then, and I’ll be honest, I skipped over this “because who wants to fly some old Russian fighter bomber”.

So I missed out on quite a few years of an excellent combat sim. 😦

But, at least it taught me to be willing to try new things – when I found out about DCS Black Shark, I gave it a try and have been hooked ever since 🙂

REALLY looking forward to all the new/enhanced features of Korea – will be happy to support them on that Day One. They’ve earned it! 🙂
