A new feature is coming soon to the DCS: AH-64D enabling radar equipped AH-64’s to scan for and engage airborne targets with 360 degree coverage. Let’s have a look!

Scanning, engaging

Matt Wagner is back with a new video for the DCS: AH-64D and this one is focused on a new radar air targeting mode for the DCS: AH-64D. The Air Targeting Mod or ATM gives options for wide, medium, narrow and zoom with 360 degree scanning available in the wide mode.

The system can identify types of targets and prioritize moving or hovering targets. Like most of the AH-64D’s capabilities, there’s a lot of depth and detail here with the system offering the pilot and CPG a ton of awareness around ground targets.

ATM will give pilots the ability to engage targets with the gun and with Hellfire missiles. US versions of this helicopter don’t have the ability to carry the Stinger missile though some export versions do. Eagle Dynamics says they are sticking with the US version for this simulation.

  1. Okay, so since the advent of the FCR, now with ATM, and given the nearly incredible low light / thermal targeting, I think I have to get serious about this chopper.

I’ve been steadfastly sticking to the Black Shark, especially with all the upgrades that came with v3, but the call of the Apache is too strong right now.

    It’s Study Time!!!

Yeah it’s coming together nicely. A good pace of updates to fill out the Apache’s capabilities.

  2. After playing a lot “Gunship 2000” in the 90s, I thought Stingers are standard equipment for AH-64.

Apparently they’ve never been fitted (outside of maybe some tests) to operational US flown AH-64D. I guess the hellfire is sufficient for the task in their minds and/or the AH-64 should have fixed wing counter air already and doesn’t need the additional capability. I’d assume that’s the thinking.

      1. The stinger would be mounted to the tip of the ‘wing’ of the helicopter, which is where the CMWS is physically welded. You can’t just pop that off and put a missile there.

It makes more sense to have increased survival with CMWS than try and yeet a missile at something you’d never see.

      2. Indeed! I had read the same and the logic around it makes sense.

    2. No, but that’s why we need an AH-1 SuperCobra – they have Sidewinders!!
