IL-2 Korea shows off Tu-2S

The next aircraft on display from the 1C Game Studios team is the Tupolev Tu-2S. We’ve got some pretty good images of the twin engine bomber so let’s have a look at it.

Lesser known bomber aircraft

I had hoped that we might eventually see the Tu-2 in the IL-2 Great Battles Series as the the bomber first started flying combat missions in 1942. The aircraft continued on to see service during the Korean War with limited service record.

The latest developer diary doesn’t give us too much information aside from some of the basics on the history of the aircraft. We have learned that they are doing two “versions” of the aircraft as they did with the B-29. One will have complex modeling while a second version will have a simplified one that will work better in massed formations.

    Question 1. Do you think that there will be a lot of third party development in the new series of IL-2? If so, do you think that it would be a good idea? I think that it would be a great idea because in that way the series would be able to cover more area in a shorter amount of time. To add to that, 1CGS could continue working on modules based on the the most pivotal battles of WWII while various other third parties could work on the less pivotal battles of WWII. I think it could work.

    Question 2. Do you ever think that the new series of IL-2 will ever go back to WWI and cover the Western Front or do you think that a (lets say) a 2030 WWI module would be too early and hinder Flying Circus sales? Maybe if they did some more modules that were not set on the Western Front, for example Galicia on the Eastern Front or Northeastern Italy, they could let Flying Circus, which is only set on the Western Front (as we all know) the older titles could be given a chance to have an extended amount of time where 1CGS is not cannibalizing sales on their own products.

    Question 3. Do you think that they will have another go at the tank war aspect of WWII? I would say that there is a lot of market potential in tanks. I think that Tank Crew was a great product with a lot of potential itself but I also think that that it was an unfinished product because it had no career mode nor any follow up titles. Kursk and other areas of the Eastern Front would be really cool for them to see but I think it would be a wise idea for them to cover other theatres of WWII like the Western Front, Italy and North Africa. But again they might need the help of third party developers (and a reasonable number of them) as I think that their main focus should be on the air war.

    another airplane that would be better used in GB, forcing it into Korea just takes slots from other types that saw more action. Did it even have any combat missions in time period they plan to depict ? But then its only AI so it dosent realy mather, it seams fighter airplanes are best they can do for players to fly in future

      The AI only nature is definitely disappointing. I would have loved to fly this in Great Battles too.

      There’s not many aircraft on NK/Soviet side so the Tu-2 would have been my pick as well. It did get used (and several were shot down) but its history is largely obscure from my basic reading on it.
