The aural experience in a flight sim is essential for communicating so much of what is going on around you and it looks like IL-2 Korea will be featuring some new sound effects that use various realistic properties to alter the sounds you’ll be hearing as you experience the new sim’s world. Let’s have a look.

Audio effect upgrade

The update today is focused specifically on various gun and cannon sounds. Essential for a combat flight sim, the new sim ups the ante a bit by working on sound changes as they relate to how distance changes not only the speed at which the observer hears the effect but also the change in tone at distance.

Here’s what they say in the dev blog:

For example, it shows the sound propagation with finite speed, as in “Great Battles”, when at a great distance the sound of a shot is heard with a significant delay after we have seen it. If we talk about the realism of sound, not only the time of sound propagation and its volume depend on the distance, but also its tone: with distance, the sounds of gunshots change their tone significantly, and this is how an experienced person can determine by ear the distance to them in life.

Of course, hearing is believing and they’ve got a short video showing off various effects.
