We’ve got our first Friday DCS world update after the team was on vacation last week for the holidays. This Friday update is focused on 2024 year in review for Eagle Dynamics as well as a really solid update from Grinnelli Designs on their DCS: F-100D Super Sabre project as well as a reminder to register your squadron for SATAC 2025 if you’re into that sort of competitive multiplayer. Let’s have a look at the latest DCS World Weekend News!
DCS: F-100 progress

Grinnelli Designs DCS: F-100D Super Sabre project appears to be making some great progress and its the focus of the latest update from Eagle Dynamics. The team has been busy modeling and capturing sounds and data from real world F-100s that are still flying such as the Collings Foundation’s F-100 Super Sabre.
Grinnelli Designs have done a new YouTube video that is about 10-minutes long providing us with a series of vignettes that tell various parts of their development story. One section shows how their 3D scans have been turned into useful geometry for DCS World and how the initial texturing efforts are coming along using the same scans as a base.

They talk about the animations for their pilot model as well as efforts to incorporate a realistic recreation of the F-100s gun cameras. Interesting extra features.
Another section talks about aircraft configuration and how they are representing a few different modifications of the aircraft including two different aerial refueling probe styles as well as two different afterburner types with both -21 and -23 style burners modeled.

We go from the virtual to the real world with a video from Wings Over Houston and the team’s hands on experiences with the F-100 performing there.
The last little bit is then focused on their efforts to create the aircraft’s flight model with high levels of authenticity to the Super Sabre (or The Hun)’s performance and handling.
Absolutely loved the video so I recommend giving it a watch!
You can also check on the status of their project via their progress tracker which is, as time of writing, is showing 66% art progress, 82% code progress, and 74% overall progress.
DCS World in review and SATAC 2025
One of the other segments of this DCS World Weekend News update is a review of some of the highlights of 2024. As this is focused highlights, it doesn’t really dwell (or mention) on some of the rougher parts of the year and DCS did have some bumps in the road that I discussed in part here. That said, there were some bright spots too!
They mention the combination of Open Beta and Stable into one release, 500 core fixes and updates to the sim with 130 aimed at AI behaviours, as well as high profile module updates with 200+ items for DCS: F-16C, 150+ for DCS: F/A-18C, and 200+ for DCS: AH-64D. Some of those were small and some were big items but it is interesting to consider the scale over the course of the year.
There were terrain scenery improvements in performance, the AH-64D got its radar, new pilot models for the F/A-18C and F-16C, the launch of the OH-5D, F-4E, CH-47F, Afghanistan, Kola, and Iraq, the F-5E remaster, and the “heavy metal assets” release.
The update ends positively,
We would like to extend our sincere thanks for your continued support and dedication throughout 2024. We remain committed to enriching DCS. Please stay tuned for the 2025 and Beyond video coming very soon!
Of course, we know that DCS World 2025 and Beyond, a video showcase of current and future content, is scheduled for January 16.
Finally, the update this week mentions the Squadron Air to Air Championship or SATAC 2025 plans for 2025.
Our format is designed to promote the utilisation of various aspects of the simulation, including different weapon types (ARH/SARH/IR) air-to-air missiles, dissimilar air combat training (DACT), and the full range of modern DCS aircraft, each playing its unique role in SATAC 2025.
Sign-ups for squadrons are now available.
More to come soon!
