Last week, Orbx released their TBM Avenger for Microsoft Flight Simulator. The large, carrier-borne, torpedo bomber is a historic legend and now its available to fly in both MSFS 2020 and 2024. Let’s have a look!

Avenger flies again

It’s been a while since a ground-up rendition of the TBM (or TBF) Avenger has been offered in a flight simulator of any kind. Pacific Fighters featured one but it was only available, officially, as an AI airplane and that always felt like a missed opportunity. Here we’ve got one, albeit in a civil flight sim and its coming to us from Orbx.

Orbx are touting realistic flight physics, detailed visuals, and authentic sounds as part of their aircraft feature set. The Avenger has been created together with aerobatic pilot Paul Bennet who owns an airworthy Avenger which surely helped with the visuals, the sounds and Orbx suggests that the flight model was worked over as well.

The aircraft is available for purchase for both MSFS 2020 and 2024 (with the 2020 edition entitling you to 2024 as well). You can buy it from OrbxDirect for $28.00 AUD (or approximately US$17.40, €16,74 or £14.01).

  1. I’m not a fan of military aircraft addons for MSFS or X-Plane because it gets me wanting that one for DCS! But I respect that others may like military aircraft for MSFS and X-Plane.

By the way I think we need more WWII aircraft for DCS. The TBF Avenger would be a good flyable asset to have for the Marianas. What would you say about needing more DCS WWII aircraft?

    1. I would love more WWII Aircraft in DCS, but not until we have more content and maps for it. I want more to do with those aircraft – theatres, enemies, missions and stuff, not just kind of farting-around in it.

I think Combat Pilot will scratch this itch, and IL2 GB and Korea will too.

My only concern with those is lack of a clickable cockpit. There is something about being able to start a plane cold and dark – it really adds to the overall immersion and makes you feel part of a complex machine.

      1. Combat Pilot said that they want to make clickable cockpits.

    2. I think that DCS would be better off not making any more WW II planes. They really should put more focus on a limited number of settings, and their heart is clearly more with modern airplanes, and the same goes for most of their customers.

      1. DCS cant really figure out what it wants to be . A lot of it is ED’s fault because they tend to have a kind of benign neglect approach to their road map and third parties where everyone gets to do whatever they want without any focus on completing a particular setting. We have WW2 in Europe but the aircraft library player and ai is pretty sparse for the variety that actually served… we are starting to get the Pacific, but the library is even worse there. Quite a few Vietnam aircraft in development but we don’t have a Vietnam map. So there is this weird back and forth that occurs where certain maps shouldn’t be built because they don’t have aircraft for the settings and certain aircraft shouldn’t be built because there isn’t a map for them. Probably too late to try to fix it now because focusing and developing one area/era would alienate the other players. But, it didn’t need to be this way. I wouldn’t say do just one thing but if you coordinate development cycles there wouldn’t be this desync between all the elements of the sim.

  2. I think with the announcement of the F-35 ED needs to stop using awful reasoning why it’s not doing something for example the maps are not high enough for strategic bombers. Completely false players will max out ordanace and fuel levels to get climb rates or accurate mission states after a long flight. Like low fuel requiring a2a refuling before the run in to target. And if you are referencing ww2 most bombers were not carrying there maximum bomb loads due to need for more fuel. I will also point out that most simmers don’t have 8 hours to fly a single mission. In the case of more modern Bombers they don’t have 18-24 hours. I still see stocks flying all the time in IL2 because bombing is fun even if it is high risk. Once again part other the reason myself an a noticeable part of the DCS community did not like the F-35 announcement is ED had cited tech resources as a reason not to do aircraft over and over the they were like hey we need more customers. Let’s go back on everything we have said for the last 8 years and B.S this plane in the sim for profit. Now they are saying no bomber due to map size.. the flag is flying brother you have the C-130 coming for airdrops and a2a refueling long range high endurance missions for the most part bombers will just drop bombs ab crusemissiles instead of pallets and troops.. if rang was the issue they could have modeled the C-2 or S-3 and it’s mods.i say start a good fund me or two with a 20$ buy in and if there is alot of interest build it and change backer $40 more on release and new purchasers $80, $70 in pre-order.

  3. Hopefully Miltech revisits the Lexington at some point. They had plans to update it, but I believe it was shelved. It was nice to use with the Gotfriends Wildcat and the FlyingIron Hellcat.

I hope so too! It’s alright but yeah it needs a bit more to really make it special.
