The developers at 1CGS are showing off their work on improving the look and animations that support their ground warfare simulation for IL-2 Korea. Let’s have a quick look at what they are showing off.

New artillery

Several types of artillery are planned for IL-2 Korea. On the North Korean and Chinese side, we have the 76 mm ZIS-3, the 122 mm M-30, and the 152 mm ML-20 howitzer. For the US/UN side they report that the the M2A1 105 mm, the M1A1 155 mm, the 203 mm M1 8-inch howitzer and the M2 Long Tom 155 mm are planned.

Screenshots show off the enhanced detail while a new video shows off the firing animations which are a clearly a step or two beyond what we’ve seen in the Great Battles Series.

More details are available on the IL-2 Korea website.

  1. As good as it all looks, for me it’s a waste… I want a flight sim par excellent, it doesn’t need this kind of detail to achieve this.

I’ll be screaming past in a Sabre or a Corsair, and certainly won’t be admiring the excellent animations of a gun crew at work… I’m happy to see them legging it for cover when they realise they are being attacked, but this intricate stuff isn’t needed really…

I do wonder if they have plans to return to a ground warfare game of some kind.

      1. God, I hope they don’t go to tanks and stuff again… there are games already out there that caters for it.

I’d like to think that this time they make a proper flight sim that has everyone that is playing on MP for instance, actually flying, not mucking about on the ground.

I know it wasn’t entirely popular and maybe it was just me but I thought the combined arms aspect of Tank Crew was so cool. It was just a little too limited to be fully convincing.

      3. yes its interesting in teory, but in practice you have to reduce amount of free slots in already small number of them online, for example 2-3 players in one tank was goal of tank crew, but you cant spend that many slots on one tank , so you end up with 3 guys in 3 tanks doing stuff, then map is wide, so your scatared if you aim to achive objectives in 2-3 h of mission, not mutch of big battle more of solo runs, same is with bomber airplanes, it would be great to have 3 guys in one bomber and have AI flight of 20 bombers spawn with you, but game is limited, then you end up having less AI so you can even have normal expiriance with 84 players. Thats why more detail is mostly hurting battle expiriances, and it seams people are catching up to this and dont realy get excited about it as they know what it means in practice. Even B-29 videos or pictures dont show more then 6 in air, i have little hope numbers of playrs or units gona be better then in GB in SP or MP missions. Thats why adding player tanks ships or what not is not welcome by airplane players, game cant handle it without cuting air stuff down.

      4. same thing with comander they plan to add, i would rather have ability to comand flight of 3 AI bombers or fighters with me online when i spawn or even 1, then this added supply aspect. Also i highly doubt SP players would like aditional tasks added to them outside of fling if comunication with wingmans or other flights during the mission is same as in GB or not mutch improved. Its like they are skiping basics and adding more unwonted stuff constantly.

      5. I still play IL2 tanks from time to time. I have GHPC, and Steel Beasts, but I like the WW2 setting in IL2 more than any of the alternatives I’ve found. There isn’t much content for it, unfortunately, apart from a bunch of missions/campaigns by a French chap mostly in a Tiger, but I do enjoy a quick mission. I don’t know what they’d do for Korea, however. The tanks in IL2 don’t really have infantry, and my understanding is although tanks were used in the Korean War, it was mostly as support for troops.

  2. I’d like to see a Tank Crew module be developed out of Korea: IL-2. Of my knowledge there has not been a proper realistic Korean War tank battle in the history of tank combat flight simulation. Would be good to see.

  3. The choice of available tanks in Korea is pretty limited, especially on the Communist side… It’s not WWII, there wasn’t huge tank on tank battles… just a waste of resources that could be better spent on much needed aircraft and features in a ‘flight sim’…

I was thinking more of the long game. Not necessarily Korea but leaving the door open to it when they return to WWII which they seem to be keen to do. And maybe its not that either… Great Battles vehicles had ground suspension setups and other stuff that seemed entirely unnecessary back in 2012 too.

  4. One might question the need for such detailed artillery crew. Until one remembers the true role of il2 Korea – to subsidise a drone training programme.

  5. ok while this is cool it looks dated .. they are rehashing the same engine again .. and doing it badly. When in comes to tanks and ground combat i think its 100% needed. While the Korean war introduced mass produced jet fighters there is not to much variation or that many aircraft that could be used for the game . unless they are going to add in heavy bombers and the Bell-47 there is not much to build off of. also they will have to go very in depth with the flight models as they are going to be directly compared to the feel and accuracy of the DCS modules of the same type. I will say with complete honesty is after flying the DCS warbirds the feel of IL2 is rather simple .. you can feel the weight of the aircraft in DCS the aircraft settle and you can feel them mush in as they slow compared to your control inputs. IL-2 never really got that feeling across to me. I think if WW2 was not a sideshow to DCS and they put some real effort into it IL-2 would not have a chance the level of flight model is noticeably better. On the other hand they did not go all in on Korea or WW2 but still they have their foot in the door and they have to compare directly with them so they better step up.. also the commander roll is completely foolish it will never be what they or the players want.. and a bad commander even for an hour or two can ruin everything .. i think the commander class ruins games like Hell let loose and similar.. hell its even annoying in insurgency sandstorm as commanders call in helo support during the long fights and everyone else either bunkers down or wastes ammo trying to grab a kill or two while the commander loads up on kills while doing nothing. I hope they put in the extra effort because if they don’t this may be their last game. and they seem to be applying it was good enough before.

I really want to see them make a noticeable step forward but all the screenshots i have seen for IL-2 Korea just look like they dropped the Korea stuff in IL-2 Great battles and that’s really not good enough the flight sim community is rather small and a large chunk of it is looking for Microsoft flight sim not combat sims.. the need to move forward they are not like DCS also there really is limited interest in the Korean air war. I know they wont but if they asked me i would respond are you using he exact same engine as IL-2 GB and if so start from scratch because you are focusing on a not verry interesting Air war with a limited amount of aircraft to model and not to many expansions. make it one of the most beautiful and accurate sims out there push DCS on Flight model accuracy and MSFS2024 on looks. It will also set you up for your next big thing … IL-2 the PASIFIC
