It’s been a few weeks now since iniBuilds first released their simulation of the Airbus A350. This highly anticipated airliner release has now hit version 1.0.2 bringing in a few more features and fixing a whole list of bugs. There’s been some interesting cross promotion with Swiss International Air Lines and iniBuilds A350 and there are a few other things to check out so… let’s have a look!

New features

Discord_9vJuCspEab.png

iniBuilds have added two new features for the A350. The first is MORA (Minimum Off-Route Altitude) which allows for terrain clearance in altitude and off route centerline together with the A350’s flight management system.

They’ve also added the SND or Secondary Navigation Display which is a backup system when the primary systems are lost or degraded.

The update and mods

There has been quite a bit of commentary about the iniBuilds A350 since the airliner launched. It seems right now that there are parts of the community with nothing but enthusiasm for the product and other parts expressing frustration with the airliner. We’ll get to that but one of the biggest items of frustration is surrounding WASM related crashes during all phases of flight. Version 1.0.2 has quite a few items aimed at stability with 8 specific items fixed in the latest version.

There’s also several dozen fixes to systems, art and screen elements, and to sounds. They’ve added miniFCU compatibility, fixed rain and contrail effects in MSFS 2020, tweaked displays, fixed a bug with manually tuning ILS frequencies, and quite a few more.

Also in the patch notes is a note about mod use. One of the criticisms I’ve seen is that some people are finding the A350 twitchy to fly at times and difficult to manage in certain weather conditions. Several mods have appeared in the community to address these issues, perceived or real, however it sounds like many of them don’t do what they advertise with iniBuilds noting down several mods won’t work because they are controlled within the WASM code for the airplane.

Here’s what they had to say broadly:

Comments and updates from community regarding flight model cfgs are mostly irrelevant, or a placebo effect, as they have little to no effect on how the aircraft performs in sim. We have tuned the plane to fly as closely to real life with the support of our technical working group and A350 pilots team.

The changelog can be found here!

Interesting cross promotion with Swiss International Air Lines

Swiss International Air Lines has just revealed a special livery being applied to one of their A350 aircraft that they are calling “Wanderlust” with a mix of graphics across the aircraft representing different parts of Swiss identity. The design, by artist Frédéric Siegel, isn’t on a real airplane yet but it has made its way into Swiss’ advertising via the iniBuilds A350.

It’s an interesting collaboration and its a livery that you can go and download for the A350 right now while the real airplane is waiting to be delivered.

Oh, my goodness – the drama over this addon!!!

I have “too many” airliners spread across 3 simulators already, so I haven’t considered buying this one (and truth be told, I’m having too much fun with A400 and C-17 “tactical” cargo flights, anyway 🙂 ).

Just seems crazy that so many people are so bitter about it…

Yet the IRL ATPL pilots who actually fly Airbus airliners for a living seem to think it’s a good addon that just needs some general polish and bug fixes.

Seems like iniBuilds are being attentive, and as this is no doubt their new Crown Jewel product, I’m sure they’ll get the (reasonable) issues sorted.

I’ve been weighing on reporting some of the more detailed drama. It’s a bit of strange thing where there was universal praise, then the drama happened, and now there’s people running around saying it’s not realistic enough or doesn’t have enough systems depth. I’m struggling to lock in on specific complaints (aside from maybe it being twitchy?).

Soon as my hardware woes are sorted, I’ll have to find out for myself!

      1. There are definitely problems with the addon, no doubt about that. And iB is releasing patches and engaging with The Community in an admirable way.

IMHO, many of the complaints are coming from people whos expectations are unrealistic. I.e., why did they buy a just-released addon for a just-released flight simulator in the first place…? Why not wait until the inevitable issues are sorted…?

It’s not like there aren’t widespread issues at release with nearly EVERY complex addon, especially in the new version of MSFS. Even Fenix took quite a while (and a couple major releases) to get the “bugs” and “inaccuracies” in their always-excellent addon mostly fixed. And theirs is still “Beta” for MSFS 24 in any case! 😉

The other significant dynamic seems to be that some people just seem to believe it’s stylish to complain about flaws in a product (whether real or perceived). That complaining shows they’ve got a sufficiently high level of expertise to sit in judgement, etc. I.e., a Superiority Complex of sorts…?

In any case, it’s just a game and we should all just focus on having fun with it.

The iB A350 is a good addon (with some teething problems) from a developer with a good track record.

If we’re going to be hyper-critical, let’s also be hyper patient before jumping right in with a new addon. 🙂

Yep, I agree completely. Hardware woes on my side aside, I do tend to wait a little bit for products to release and get their feet under them before writing up my review. It probably doesn’t do my favours in terms of getting the most reads/clicks but I prefer to take my time.

There’s definitely an appeal to being critical just for the sake of being critical but I think that leads to people getting lost in the weeds sometimes and not enjoying the thing in front of them.

I am curious to try it out for myself though I suspect my playstyle will suit it well. I think their A300 is quite good (I really need to do a definitive review on that still now that its over in 2024) and their included A320neo, A321, and A330 series are really enjoyable in my experience.

        Looking forward to it!

  2. I wonder how the Digital Flight Dynamics A350 is going. I wonder how it will measure up to the iniBuilds A350. I guess only time will tell. What do you think?

I haven’t heard anything about that one in a long time. I went to check on their status and nothing has been posted in several months. It’s a freeware group and not all freeware developers survive.

      1. That’s true, not all freeware developers make it. Sometimes even payware ones don’t even make it. Remember QualityWings and their 787 for MSFS 2020? That has disappeared into obscurity.
