DCS World users have been asking for a more contemporary “green map” for quite a long time now as some of the drier regions of the world have been explored through successive map releases. Now Eagle Dynamics and Ugra Media are doing something a little different with a Cold War era map. Let’s have a look at the latest news!

It’s the Cold War!

Following a trend that has been building over the course of several years now, DCS World fans and developers have been producing and releasing quite a variety of Cold War era aircraft for us to fly in DCS World. The phenomenon hit critical mass when Engima’s Cold War server (now Heatblur’s Cold War server) surged in popularity a couple of years ago. That and the release of aircraft like Aerges Mirage F1, RAZBAM’s MiG-19, Eagle Dynamics own Mi-24P Hind as well as the growing interest in long time series veterans like the F-5E and MiG-21bis. The growth here is going to continue as we’ve got a F-100, G.91, MiG-17, A-7 Corsair II and many more releases in various states of development. That’s a lot of preamble… let’s talk about what we know about the map!

Ugra Media are producing this map and are clearly using every trick they learned from their DCS: Syria project to make this one work. The map is set in the 1980s with a 980×800 km map covering the following countries according to the release:

  • West Germany
  • East Germany
  • Poland
  • Czechoslovakia
  • Low Countries

The map highlights the Fulda Gap, Berlin, Frankfurt, Hamburg, Leipzig and Hannover. There are 100 airfields and heliports included as well as other military bases and checkpoints between east and west Germany.

Ugra Media are following their typical release strategy with a phase one release incorporating the zones marked below while phase two and three will extend and expand the coverage area. Ugra Media’s previous release, DCS: Syria, was extended several times from a much smaller scale map to one covering much of the theatre with dozens of airports, landmarks and cities added as time went on. It’s likely they will follow that method in some capacity.

As part of their early access plans are adding additional seasons. The map will start with just the summer season and then extend into other seasonal varieties as time goes on with spring, autumn and winter seasons planned.

Quite a few screenshots are available here!

Ugra have also separately released two preview videos titled “Berlin first look” …

… and then a second video called “Ramstein airbase.”

Neither Ugra Media nor Eagle Dynamics are saying when this project will release, however, the relatively complete images and video suggests that major work is well underway. Typically when Ugra Media has started to release videos, its meant that a launch isn’t too far away. Stay tuned for that!

  1. I am digging this map big time. Love the big airfields. Wouldn’t be surprised it it’s out in Q2. maps seem to come out a lot faster than planes.

      Ja, Potsdam.

I know in 1987 when I was looking at a tv tower in the far distance, my parents said “Thats West Berlin. You’ll never get there”. Reminds me, that we need to stick with our dreams to make things happen.

That must be a bit of a surreal experience to look back on!

  3. Recent DCS maps have struggled to gain critical mass in content and MP servers. Here’s hoping that the intersection of a great map making studio and in-demand terrain boosts this one to popularity! People will be screaming for a full fidelity A-10A.

  4. I think a part of the problem is that the reason why a lot of these DCS maps are not getting enough attention for multiplayer is because there are a lack of both Cold War and post Cold War aircraft that fought in these regions. For example, lets say the Middle Eastern maps need more aircraft that fought in the Israeli Air Force, and the Egyptian, Iraqi, Jordanian, Lebanese, and Syrian Air Forces. For the Israelis, I think what is needed in the Dassault Super Mystere, Douglas A-4N, IAI Kfir & the Nesher. For the various Arab air forces, what is needed is the MiG-17F, MiG-21MF & PF, MiG-23BN & MS, MiG-25RBT, MiG-29A, Su-7BM and the Su-25A.

    1. The MIG 21, MIG 29, L 39, SU 25, were the most numerous aircraft in the Eastern Bloc until the 1990s. ČSSR, GDR, Poland.

In November 1990, there were already 367 Su-27/-27UB (Flanker B/C) aircraft in the European part of the USSR and Poland.

  6. I’m from the CZECH REPUBLIC and I’m happy that a piece of our country will be in DCS. And now something from the Cold War: The Air Battle over Merklín was a clash between two Czechoslovak MiG-15 fighters and two American F-84 Thunderjet fighters that took place on March 10, 1953. It was the first mutual clash between the USAF and the Czechoslovak Air Force during the Cold War. During this clash, Lieutenant Šrámek managed to shoot down one American aircraft.

    1. At a distance of 35 kilometers from the state border, they encountered two American F-84E Thunderjet aircraft flying at a lower altitude than themselves. Lieutenant Šrámek informed the command post about the Americans and was ordered to fire a warning burst, which was supposed to force the Americans to land at the Czechoslovak airfield. He then put his MiG into a descending flight and a turn. The Americans responded by splitting up. Šrámek followed the lead aircraft and fired a warning burst. The American aircraft nevertheless tried to escape to Germany. Šrámek was therefore ordered to shoot down the aircraft. The first burst hit the aircraft from a distance of 300 meters. Flames shot out of the Thunderjet and the pilot G. A. Brown (who was, among other things, a veteran of the Korean War[2]) had to eject. He was already 58 km above German territory. That ended the fight.

  10. So glad we’re getting more green maps!

i think this one is going to prove popular even tho we (thankfully) never had a modern war there.

Really hoping that Ugra can bring the new highly detailed terrain mesh to this map. It delivers a HUGE immersion improvement and has shifted my flights from Syria to AFG and IRQ as a result.

oh, and glad that Ugra is making this one! They’ve really become a great scenery dev 🙂
