This next feature from the 1C Game Studios crew is focused on the trains of IL-2 Korea. There’s a surprising amount of detail and effort that have been put into making sure that these key logistical pieces are detailed and I have to say it looks quite good. Let’s check it all out.

Almost like a train sim!

IL-2 Korea is coming along and the dev team have recently been featuring a mix of aircraft related updates together with other updates. We’ve seen trucks, artillery, mortars and others all listed and we’ve seen a little bit about trains previously but now we’re getting a focus on it.

Korea will feature 3D rails (in Great Battles they were flat) and more detailed train stations, trains and various forms of cars including flatbeds with tanks on them.

The team have decided to choose two locomotives to be representative of the wide variety of locomotives used. The American USATC S160 in a 2-8-0 scheme will be the “blue” side locomotive while the Czechoslovakian Type 475.1 in a 4-8-2 scheme will be on the red side. The three number system indicates running wheels, driving wheels and trailing wheels respectively.

The team have done passenger, mail, boxcar, tank car, gondola car, flat car and AAA flat car each with a variety of cargo types for each. There are 28 combinations in total.

A video has been released that shows it all off in action and its looks great. Its not too far off from what I see while playing Train Sim World.

  1. Wow – this is shaping up to be a rather nice simulator!

I feel like Korea isn’t generating as much “buzz” as perhaps it should be…?

It seems to be a rather substantial leap forward over the current BoX series!

(plus the recent nugget of news that there will (at some point) be Carrier Ops with the Corsair and Panther!!!) 🙂

    1. sky and map from what they show, dont seam that mutch improved from GB, also no supprise forghoten war is not so popular, they already started to talk about Pacific so WW2 people dont lose hope. To me if they make AI and campaign better people will come, trains wont atract new flyers, WW2 guys will just stay and play GB.

I recall a comment that we haven’t actually seen the finished Korea map yet and that what we’ve seen so far has been a test map. A bit like the Lapino map used during the early days of Battle of Stalingrad’s early access.

Will have to see how it evolves.

  2. Absolutely beautiful. I am looking forwards to experiencing the finished product once the game is out.

I wonder why they couldn’t improve the trains in Great Battles. I think if I were to give an answer such an overhaul of something minor in an outdated game wouldn’t be worth it for them to do it now. What would you say?

    1. They are indeed not going to do anything beyond some tuning and bugfixing.

      1. I kind of figured. It wouldn’t make much business sense to devote resources to fixing something so minor and something we hardly ever see.

They could improve them but it makes little business sense.

  3. Do you think we will see much of trains when they head into the Pacific?

Some. If they do the Okinawa campaign, there were train lines running north-south on that island. Philippines had rail lines too.

The tech will be useful in the future I’m sure as well.

      1. Trains were the life line of those fighting on the front line. They are an integral part of the game that is largely and will probably largely be overlooked by players. I believe the most important detail to add is detail that people don’t normally pay attention to. That way the few who do will be astounded with it.

  4. Man I am licking my chops as typically a Fighter Bomber/Attack Aircraft pilot at this sim. The variety/detail in ground targets looks like maybe the most in a flight sim ever between what we’ve seen so far from trains, mortars, ground troops, tanks, and trucks. So cool!

Look at the detail in that train yard!
