The latest Developer Diary from the 1C Game Studios team is talking about IL-2 Korea and some new physics and effects that impact vehicles in the new sim. Here’s what they are showing.

New visuals, physics

Vehicles are getting an upgrade in the next gen IL-2 sim. IL-2 Korea is going to feature enhanced visuals and effects for the ground vehicles in the sim. The developers point out in their dev diary that the series is based around a famous ground attack aircraft and that they want to make sure that the interactions between the pilot and the objects they are attacking are engaging.

What they show are physics driven effects. A wheel can come off, nearby explosion can throw a jeep off the road, vehicles will show damage decals and effects, and even the cargo can get independently thrown out of the vehicle.

To help illustrate, they’ve shared this video as well!

The full dev diary has more so be sure to check it out.

  1. That was pretty cool.

Yeah! Should be interesting to see the effects in action as you swoop in during a strike mission.

  2. Looks incredible for a flight sim to do this! Wow…

Very interesting how all this will tie to the possible (?) carrier ops expansion/DLC. Deck objects physics if things go sideways, or even plane bits physics.

What about objects/bits reacting to explosions during a strike raid? This is shaping to be ground breaking on some levels.

I hadn’t considered that but there’s a lot of sense in that. Developing ground physics interactions, including deck interactions, probably is part of the strategic direction here.

  3. more and more it looks like they are preparing for TC: Korea, a lot of focus on ground aspects of sim shown in last few months from them, wonder what interesting tanks could be playable

Could be! At the same time, this has a lot of benefits for pilots (ground attackers primarily) so there’s value for that aspect too. Another comment suggested that carrier deck physics may be connected to this effort and that makes sense too!

      1. Yep, I just wish they find a way to have more units in the game, so the world is more filled.

      2. i also hope they solved this problem, as its big one in GB, if they are showing us this type of detail. If in missions you cant have more objects and airplanes, all this details are gona be pointles, its just gona be not used, turned off or despised by players. I would just expect more bending of frames of truck bed in video it looks to ridgid

  4. I hope they do a Tank Crew 2.0. I think that doing a tank combat simulator in Great Battles was too early because they technologies weren’t quite there yet. But they are now with this new sim. This could very well indicate that they are going to do a Tank Crew for the new series, though I would be more inclined to assume that it won’t be for Korea, but more so for a WWII battle recreation.

  5. I’m looking forward to this but I’m slightly wary of the need for a beefier CPU given that BoX already goes into slo-mo mode when in busy scenarios (also my biggest bugbear about the series; I’d rather have lower fps).

I’d imagine that with the level of detail Il-2 Korea will have, it’ll sell itself via YouTube videos much like DCS World does.

The slow-mo is almost entirely because of the AI system. The number of AI objects has an upper limit and then it starts to bog down. Even the most capable CPUs struggle which suggests to me that there’s something inherently at issue with that system and that a more efficient one would probably run better.

The same could be said for physics. They do say that the changes they’ve made have resulted in almost no performance hit so we’ll have to see.

Also curious to see how they manage to update AI. It was chronically underdeveloped during Great Battles heyday.

    2. They said theres gona be simple mode AI, not so hard on CPU like in GB, i expect performances atleast on GB level anything better ill be suprised.

Yes, absolutely. That’s intended for the large bomber formations and should help make for some interesting experiences that way.

Not sure if other AI will be enhanced and refined to run more smoothly as well.
