Released yesterday without much fanfare, Update 5.507 for the IL-2 Sturmovik: Great Battles Series is a relatively modest update for the series with a number of fixes and some minor content additions. Let’s have a look!

What you can expect

The first item on the list is word from the devs that some texturing optimization has allowed for better memory usage on the Stalingrad, Normandy and Rhineland maps. They don’t specify what they did but some errors were reportedly fixed in the process. A small performance update is always good.

What follows are a number of fixes to aircraft and items. The Sopwith Stutter’s bomb release handle is now animated, a cracked windshield bug on the P-39L-1 has been solved, the Ju88C-6’s altimeter was corrected, and there are new tournament liveries in red, blue, green and yellow colours for P-38J-25, Spitfire XIVe, and Bf109G-6A/S all available in the custom schemes tab.

Career mode has a number of fixes with specific fixes for II/KG.51 progression in the Bodenplatte career and changes to Flying Circus career mode where German pilots are issued parachutes starting January 1918 reflecting the historical reality.

Flying Circus IV livery templates are also now available.

  1. y’know, given that they’re deep into Korea development, I’m REALLY impressed that they keep improving the current sim.

they could easily write off little things like this.

shows dedication to quality and pride in workmanship.

    glad to continue supporting them!

One thing I noticed the most with IL-2 is the quality of the software. Updates are rare and modifications are small – because they have a very good process of software-testing.

  3. I am convinced that IL-2 Great Battles has a lot of life left in it and I think a third party should do one last module based on a late 1944 to early 1945 Eastern Front campaign like the Vistula-Oder Offensive or one around Balaton in Hungary, with guidance from 1CGS, while they work on Korea and the Pacific. I think a really late war Eastern Front could be a huge hit. But whether third parties want to do it or not is another matter. And would 1CGS share their game building technologies with third parties or would they keep it secret for a long time, and only allow third parties to use GB game building tech? Sorry I got a bit off topic.
