It’s been a long time since we last heard anything big from Synaptic Simulations on their in development A220 project, however, that has changed today with a status update encompassing most of the project and what they’ve been busy doing.

Developing a very different kind of Airbus

Synaptic Simulations started out as a freeware developer that then decided to aim their goals higher becoming a commercial developer and then cementing that with a partnership with iniBuilds.

The two teams have been working together to develop the project and their developer diary is keen to point out the extreme levels of detail that they’ve gone into everything from the visual model to the systems. They report, for example, that the model has been reworked right down to the rivets with correct part numbers and positioning. The exterior model has openable engine cowlings, APU maintenance doors, avionics bays, and panels throughout the aircraft for added immersion.

Over on the systems side, it sounds like Synaptic has really gone deep into the systems too simulating the computers, electronics, hydrualics and databuses that make everything work. There are 646 components modeled so far with an additional 368 electrical components and 995 connections. They’ve also modeled all 256 circuit breakers and 636 solid-state power controllers.

The A220 started life as a Bombardier project that Airbus then bought a controlling interest in. That means that the aircraft’s control modes (rather than control laws ala other Airbus models) are specific to the Bombardier built aircraft.

There’s so much more covered in the developer diary but hopefully you get the picture. Synaptic have been busy building this aircraft out with its avionics, deep system modeling, and detailed exterior.

Where they go from here

Synaptic report that they are planning to release for both MSFS 2020 and 2024 with simultaneous launches on both the iniBuilds Store and in the Microsoft Marketplace. The A220-300 would be launched initially with the A220-100 added for free alongside other updates post launch.

The team are planning to have a development stream in May at which point they plan to lay out a release timeline.

Check out the full update here! Personally looking forward to the next update in May!

  1. Everything about the Synaptic Simulations A220 looks nothing short of stunning. I’ll buy it as soon as I can when it is out.

  2. I think Synaptic Simulations should do a CRJ family once they have finished their A220 because a) the sim would benefit from study level CRJ (in terms of systems and flight modeling) and b) I remember you saying that third party developers tend to stick with the same aircraft manufacturers and it makes sense to do so. And both the A220 and the CRJ were designed and developed by Bombardier.

I’m very excited about the work that this team is doing. Their A220 appears impressive and I’ll be picking that one up very quickly after it launches.

Let’s not get too far ahead of that. ☺️

The excitement is good though. We’ve got a couple of major projects in the works and beginning to reach the tunnel. F70/100, 757/767, probably this A220, not sure if PMDG’s 747 is going to be seen this year or no. But you get the idea. Some encouraging experiences to add to an excellent mix already.

  3. I am cautiously optimistic about this one and super excited that there’s going to be an A220 in any sim! Fingers crossed for a top-shelf product. I’ve flown on the Air Canada A220 a few times between Seattle and Toronto and I have to say it’s about the only plane I really look forward to flying on (and the A350) because it’s just so damn comfortable in coach! Big windows, modern and roomy. Great news. PMDG 747? my guess is the hype will start late in the year. Release next year :(. On the other hand, they’ve got a lot of products in the pipeline, the entire 777 range, the updated 737NGs, the DC6, the 747-200 and then -400, and then the unannounced secret project. So, with all that and the reported larger development team, there’s every chance we’ll see the QOTS this year!

I haven’t yet had the pleasure but I really want to get to fly on an A220 one of these days. Love the look of the aircraft and glad to hear its a comfortable one to fly in.

Lots of good options coming down the pipeline this year. PMDG’s going to be quite busy. 777-200ER tomorrow for example!
