A lot of DCS World mods struggle to find a footing but there are some good examples, the community A-4 project being a shining one, where those have grown to be widely accepted. That may happen with this Su-22M4 mod that has recently been shown off in a lengthy video. Let’s have a look!

Testing capabilities with this mod

With a custom cockpit and external model and with systems based on the Flaming Cliffs Su-25, the Su-22M4 mod has attracted some serious attention within the community recently.

The mod’s creator, known as Vinntorez on the DCS community forums and on YouTube, released a nearly 12-minute video showcasing the aircraft in a low level strike on a SAM site. The video showcased the custom cockpit visuals, external model, and the usage of KH-29L missiles, with unguided rockets and cannon.

The video has picked up just over 23,000 views at time of writing and has seen quite a bit of interest and praise across the community.

The mod is not yet released but it has an information thread here on the DCSD forums that details some of the effort going into it. Hopefully we’ll see a release and a project that may be able to sustain itself the way the A-4 Skyhawk mod does.

The cockpit is really well done! I’m impressed with what they’ve been able to do.

  2. I wonder if OctopusG or Magnitude 3LLC will go ahead with their own rumored Su-17/22 for DCS World. The next few years will be interesting for DCS World.

  4. I am very reluctant to use non-official mods. “Garage” developers can not climb up to the level where are the programmers from ED, Heatblur, etc. A-4 Skyhawk is quite good, but I bet if ED took control of it, the flight model and other features would need many fixes.

Mods tend to have more issues for sure. They can be fun, even valuable, but sometimes they don’t work out too. Still interesting and newsworthy at times.

    2. Of course, mods have their limitations, but they’re still wonderful aircraft that might not otherwise exist in DCS. Sometimes they do become payware under an established developer, like the IFE MB-339.

    3. not sure how you can write this after the F-35 announcement.it is impossible for ED to have all the data needed to get the F-35 to the same level of simulation as the F-14 or F-4.so at this point community mods are the way to go for me, if ED can use essentially wikipedia specs to model a F-35, i dont see why the community then cant go ahead and model any damn aircraft they please based on essentially wikipedia specs.

This is kind of a weird take…

The things that make the F-35 special IRL aren’t well simulated in DCSW in ANY module. E.g., electronic warfare, datalinks, sensor fusion, ISR, GCI/AWACS, and, of course, “stealth” / low observables.

And even to the degree they are, those things can’t really be taken advantage of in a single-player scenario, or even in multi-player, by the usual civilian sim pilot (myself included).

All ED really has to do is normalize Radar Cross Section and IR signatures across the modules, and perhaps introduce some of the newer munitions like LRASM, SDB, AMRAAM D or 260, etc.

Beyond that, this is just a kinematically lower performing Viper/Super Hornet/Strike Eagle.

Mods aren’t really my thing, but I appreciate the huge investment of time & talent these folks put into them!

And this one looks pretty dang good! Maybe they’ll eventually be able to become a Full Fidelity developer 🙂

It’s not my focus either but occasionally one rises to being quite interesting and apparently well done. Plus sometimes mods become modules so you never know.
