A new developer diary from 1C Game Studios focuses on the tanks of the forthcoming IL-2 Korea flight sim. Let’s have a look at the heavy ground vehicles of this new sim.
Late 1940s era tanks
A lot of the tanks of the Korean War are holdovers from those that fought through to the end of World War II. There’s quite a few familiar configurations here, albeit with some modifications.
Planned and on display inclusions of US/Allied tanks include the M4A3E8 modification of the Sherman tank as well as the M46 Patton – a medium or heavy tank depending on who you ask. There will also be the M7B1 Priest (with 105 M2A1 howitzer) and M40 Gun Motor Carriage (with 155 mm Long Tom) filling out the medium and heavy self propelled guns respectively.

Over on the “red” side we’ve got the T-38-85 medium and IS-2 heavy tanks. There’s also the SU-76M (with a ZIS-3 76mm gun) and ISU-122 (with a 122mm gun naturally).

Development and detail
There is also some discussion in the update surrounding technology with the developers saying that the visual quality is comparable to player controlled tanks for Tank Crew. These details are apparently achieved while having 2.5 times fewer polygons and four times smaller textures and that newer rendering technologies have allowed for such gains.
They also talk about the dev time required to produce these:
Interestingly, despite the significant increase in the visual quality of AI-controlled ground vehicles, production times have not increased substantially and are comparable to those in Battle of Stalingrad—again, a result of new technologies and approaches. What would previously have required an overwhelming amount of time and resources, or been completely unfeasible, is now possible.
That is interesting.
Ultimately it looks like we’ve got a good selection of armored vehicles for this sim that are well suited to the armored formations of the time.
