After a long development period, Aeroplane Heaven have released their Avro Type 683 Lancaster for Microsoft Flight Simulator. Let’s have a look at this new release and what the company is saying about compatibility.

Now available

Aeroplane Heaven are touting a detailed interior and exterior built using factory plans and drawings, Echo 19 authored audio, 7 authentic liveries, interior modeling that captures all 7 stations of the bomber, and various configurations including the H2S with radar dome and internal modifications as well as the famous dam buster configuration.

The aircraft is available for $34.99 USD via the Aeroplane Heaven store and it is slated to come to the Marketplace soon.

The aircraft has been, according to the developer, built for Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 using that simulators SDK (software development kit) and thus is natively supporting that sim. The aircraft has been tested and does work in compatibility mode, as many aircraft do, for MSFS 2024.

The company reports via their Facebook page that there are frame rate issues in 2024 near more complex airports writing the following statement:

The Lancaster runs perfectly fine in FS2024. There is a frame rate drop around busy airports due in part to the size of the textures and just all the gubbins inside. You will need a pretty impressive rig to run it in FS2024 and that means a 40 series Nvidia card at least and a fairly new CPU, RAM wise its as much as you can afford.

If you’re thinking of purchasing, seek out a few of the reviews that have already come out to see how folks are finding it in either 2020 or 2024 versions of Microsoft Flight Simulator and see if performance or features will be a concern for you.

So glad someone’s finally done this!

Haven’t seen any reviews on this yet, but as long as it’s not a dumpster fire, it’s definitely one for my Historical Collection.

    FOUR Merlin engines!!”

Aeroplane Heaven have a chequered reputation with some good and solid projects and others that were disappointing. I hope the Lancaster fits into the solid category.

I have the pleasure of occasionally being under the flight path of one of the world’s only remaining Lancaster bombers and I can absolutely get behind the incredible sound that is the roar of four Merlin engines rumbling away. Really beautiful!

  2. This is a welcome addition to MSFS. Still waiting for the DCS community Project Lancaster. The “museum” aspect of flight sim is important to me. Last time I was at a flight museum, I sat in a lot of cockpits, but all the busted switches and dirty plexiglass over the controls kept a separation between me and the aircraft. In someways, I feel more in touch with the aircraft in the flight sim, while in other ways it feels good to touch, sit in the cockpit and see & feel the proportions.

  3. Kind of tragic that there is a detailed albeit toothless Lancaster in MSFS when it has never made it into a combat sim despite some past tries (Target for Tonight)
