The latest IL-2 Korea dev update focuses on the things that go ‘boom!’

Ready for a breakdown of everything that you can lob at the ground in IL-2 Korea? We’ve got that now thanks to Dev Blog #49. Let’s check it out.

It goes boom

American and Soviet aircraft air to ground munitions are the focus with this next developer update. From Napalm to conventional high-explosive warheads, HVAR and Tiny Tim rockets, and PTAB anti-armor bomblets, there’s quite a mix of offerings coming up. Most of them we’ve seen before although Napalm and illumination bombs are new and some, like the HVAR and Tiny Tim, are on scales that we’ve not seen before.

Some of the screenshots that back up the update include some great shots of aircraft on both sides.

The Soviet side’s line-up consists of purpose designed aircraft with the MiG-15 having just a limited 100kg bomb loadout while the IL-10 is focused on ground attack and can carry up to 600kg of bombs mostly in smaller sizes (100kg in the internal bays, 250kg on the external racks… just like the IL-2).

The American side is much more flexible with nearly every aircraft having a ground attack capability from the F-51 Mustang to the F-80C, F-84 and F-86. Most of them can carry a mix of rockets and bombs but its the F-84 that stands out in the list and in the screenshots with its optional, and massive, 32 HVAR rocket loadout.

    Question. This is a little unrelated but if IL-2 were to do a module of the Suez Crisis of 1956, would you be keen to buy and play?

      Interesting period, IMHO. However, it only lasted a little over a week. Not a lot of room there for much of anything outside of an MP focused game as anything career related would be utterly moot.

      I think anything with combat) between 45 and the 70s is very highly yearned by the combat flight sim community.

      It really puzzled me how long it took for a sim to release under the Korean war theme in recent times. Another one is the 20th century’s Vietnam war.

      Specifically? Not really on its own. Cold War in a broader context perhaps with a kind of anthology approach to the subject matter with overlapping aircraft options.

        Aircraft are cool. Compelling experiences are what makes for a great combat flight sim.

        Yeah, not that much happened as the Anglo-French-Israeli alliance destroyed many Egyptian planes on the ground before they could utilize them. I mean, they could greatly exaggerate the air war while still being believable, but that would be going away from IL-2’s key gameplay features: making it as historically accurate as possible. Still, I would buy a Suez Crisis module if the air war was mastly fictional.

        But I get what you mean. I don’t think it would be worthwhile doing as it would cost too much and the risk of not making their money back is too great. Wouldn’t it cost millions to make an IL-2 module these days?

    so excited for Il2 Korea. I think Il2 is the only sim right now that stays true to the “old” flight sim formula, the one we grew up with.

    Where you have a complete game, with missions and a campaign, where you can hop into a plane and just fly, and where the realism is just enough where you dont have to spend weeks just to get into the air.

    I have no idea what to expect but I am super exited to play soon.

      It is a great combination of features and approaches to simulation. It didn’t at the start but over time it managed to get the “game” part of the experience to be in a good place.

    o man, ground attacks gona be so onesided, One side hunt for AI bombers, onther side hunt for AI ground units 🙂

      It does seem a little one sided when it comes to player flyable ground attack options.

      A lot rests on the IL-10’s abilities to blast ground targets. The one thing it has over the competition are the 23mm VYa cannons. I’m not sure if the variant with four NS-23 cannons is on offer.

        One-sided? The module is filled with planes that were used for ground attack. The Yak-9P did ground attack, the La-11, IL-10, F9F, F-51, F4U, F-80 and the F-84. So both sides have a lot of ground attack options.

        What I mean, and I wasn’t very specific, is that you’ve got the F-51 with the ability to carry a half dozen HVAR and a couple of bombs. Or the F-86 with the same payload. Plus six M2 or M3 .50cal. The Yak-9P has cannons but no under wing payload at all. The MiG-15bis is limited to two 100kg bombs. I’m not remembering if the La-11 had any underwing options (and the ammo capacity on the guns is very short). Meanwhile the F-84 can overload to 32 HVAR. It’s not 1:1 there. A lot rides on the IL-10.

        Yeah, neither the Yak-9P or La-11 could carry bombs, that is true.

        But IL-2 is a historic game, and in the actual war the North-Koreans didn’t do CAS and their IL-10’s were only effective right at the start of the war, but they lost most of them in a matter of weeks. So it is historically accurate for the UN forces to do way more bombing and for the North to focus primary on anti-air.

        And this is why I wrote it’s a bit one sided ☺️ It’s historical but not symmetrical and CAS is going to be focused with the US forces. Because it’s also a combat sim with multiplayer, there is a certain “meta” that has to be understood and there I think we’ll see the IL-10 do the heavy lifting.

        IL-10 is slower then any other ground attacker in game even F-86A can do more damage with its paylod, and in Korea .50 cal will have better ammo, its gona be nightmare for IL-10s to get to targets compared to other options, and when you look at it its only human controled ground attacker, if only they had option to add more bombs or rockets to MIG, but its just not realistic

        This is fully realistic, as the real IL-10’s were decimated quickly. But the IL-2 is also slow and fairly defenseless in IL-2 GB, and they made it work with campaigns that set conditions so they had a chance.

        And an F-86 going to the deck to hit a slow-flying IL-10 near the ground would have a hard time getting a lot of hits in without slowing down and being an easy target for any Migs.

        It should be a complex dynamic between the fast jets and the slower props. I’m curious to see how that works out.

    Definitley getting. The Korean War especially in the sky was really unique, damn turboprops vs jets is so cool cannot wait, see you in the skies of Korea with my Lavochkin over mig alley
