Zeppelin and Western Front map improvements incoming

Great news for fans of World War I air combat with a big update for 1C Game Studios Flying Circus. The IL-2 Sturmovik: Great Battles based add-on is nearly ready to release its Zepplin and Western Front map update. Let’s have a look at the details.

Flying Circus is the focus of an upcoming IL-2 Great Battles update with the Ugra Media built Western Front map getting a series of updates. Mons, Namur, Aachen, Verviers, Maastricht, Bruxelles, and Charleroi have all been added to the map together with additional points of interest and improvements to Paris. Other sections of the map have been updated as well with additional railway stations added all across the map.

The other big thing coming is quite a big thing: the German Zeppelin R Class! It was confirmed quite some time ago but only revealed in development form more recently. The developer diary indicates that creating it was a complex process and that it has its own, very specific damage model, effects, sounds and AI associated with its operation. Career mode will offer six new types of missions relating to the defense and attack of Zeppelins and their bases.

The addition is coming to all Flying Circus flyers in an update reportedly coming soon. Check out the IL-2 Sturmovik website developer diary for more information.

    Never thought that we would see a number of cities from the Rhineland map on the FC map! A number of people have declared that we didn’t get the Channel Map or more WW1 planes like slower two-seaters because FC wasn’t very profitable, but you don’t model Paris and these major cities if something isn’t selling very well.

    From a comment Han made recently they hope to do another WW1 series in the Korea engine. In other words it was the shift to a new game engine that resulted in no more maps and (player flyable) aircraft for FC.

      That’d be very interesting to see the WWI experience continue to evolve. I haven’t much hope for any other developer to tackle it and its still some of the most fun you can have in a combat flight sim.

    If I learned one thing from DCS (other than I wish I never fell down that rabbit hole), it’s that Ugra Media is very good at what they do. Any work they do on FC and GB is great news! Hopefully they also contribute to Korea at some point. I’m an Ugra Media fan.

      They are very good at what they do. It took them some time to get there and their early efforts with DCS: Normandy 1944 saw mixed reports from the community at the time but as with many good developers they kept at it and their most recent projects have shown what a capable team they have become on both DCS and IL-2 series. Very impressive.
