A new DCS: AH-64D video has just arrived with Matt “Wags” Wagner back on YouTube showing us how a new upcoming feature works. This time its the Terrain Profile Mode (TPM) used to help in avoiding terrain and obstacles at low altitudes. Here’s how it works.

Low flying with help

According to the new video from Matt Wagner, Terrain Profile Mode (TPM), uses the fire control radar to map out the terrain ahead. Terrain and obstacles ahead are mapped by the radar in this mode and displayed on the display with black shading indicating clear navigation ahead while light and dark grey shading showing terrain in the clearance plane, and white shading showing off terrain that you need to avoid.

The system is particularly useful for avoiding terrain in low-light or low-visibility situations as the radar is not affected by night time or by fog or rain.

Another feature will add the profile lines to the HMD in a future update and that specific feature will be shown off in a future video.

As always, these videos are good to see as evidence of activity on various modules (this time its the Apache) functioning as both preview and tutorial.

  1. I’ll admit I still prefer the Blackshark for a variety of reasons.

but the Apache is just so deep and so capable across the board that I can’t stay away from it 😁

    1. Yeah the Blackshark is quite a good experience. A lot of it is fairly intuitive in its own way and I found myself flying it more than the Apache. But I can see Apache’s depth and capability too. Do you fly them both equally?

  2. I have been happy with the Apache from the day I purchased it (pre-FCR). It just keeps getting better. Maybe I am easy to please. I take modules as they are, but of course game breaking bugs are another thing.

    1. It does keep getting better! I’m glad to see it.

Apache has not been one that I’ve been able to really learn yet. I’ve bounced off of it pretty hard more than a few times. It’s a complex beast but very capable surely!

  3. Eagle Dynamics is planning on making an AH-1 Cobra, but they don’t know when they’re going to start.
