A new update from PMDG has come out with an update from Robert S. Randazzo on the status of some upcoming updates for PMDG’s 737NG line-up as well as a bit of news about the 777 as well. Here’s the latest!

WASM items and the 777

The WASM environment that Microsoft Flight Simulator uses to allow developers to run high fidelity aircraft, like PMDG’s 737 line, works well when its working well but nearly everyone (it seems) has experienced at least one instance where the environment crashed and the aircraft they were flying became unusable in one way or another. PMDG are not immune to this and have been working to minimize the potential of a crash. The latest updates, rolled out in the last few days on their OC3 software, are aimed at that.

We remain certain that WASM crashes come about because of some instability in the way MSFS allocates dynamic memory for use by 3rd party DLC in normal operation. We have invested a significant amount of developer time into looking at ways to minimize the potential exposure PMDG customers have to such an experience, and our latest effort to protect against them is rolled into this build.

One of the fixes involves a crash that involves flight paths and manipulating the paths after setting up an initial STAR.

Robert reports that they haven’t yet finished with their efforts here and that more work on minimizing WASM crashes is ongoing. The 777 series is also going to be updated with these fixes so the benefits being rolled out to 737NG owners will translate over.

The 777 is also going to see some fleet-wide updates coming soon though we don’t know all of the details yet. That is still to come.

Exterior update and the -700

So far, PMDG have released the 737-800, then the -900 and -600 over the course of the last couple of months. The -700 is still to come and is expected to arrive by the end of this month.

Together with the -700 is an exterior model update which is also slated to come. Robert says that this will take full advantage of MSFS 2024 and increase the detail level of the 737 model. It sounds like the -700 will get that update and then other aircraft will see an update soon after.

Hopefully this update will bring PMDG’s 737NG series more in line with modern expectations and further distinguish the 2024 variants, which were all paid updates, from their 2020 predecessors.
