DCS World Weekend News update was a little light on flying details, however, we have learned some new information about upcoming changes and improvements to the integrated voice chat system. Let’s have a look and do a little speculation.

More teamwork makes the dreamwork?

Integrated voice has been a DCS World roadmap item for years now and the initial implementation has been with us for a few of them already. But Eagle Dynamics does look to be doing some interesting things to take it above and beyond.

Eagle Dynamics is talking about a more flexible system where mission creators can put radios on a range of entities (everything from a truck or tank to a radar station or control tower). The idea, as they state, is to allow players to become AWACS operators, a forward observer, or operate as ATC.

Here’s where the simulation gets in as the update indicates that radio simulation will be a factor. Line of sight, frequency management, and real time voice processing are part of what will affect the quality or even if the radio signal is sent or received.

Even better, it sounds like Eagle Dynamics has been listening to players about making systems like these more flexible. Here’s what they say:

To make things even more accessible, we are developing a lightweight client that lets users join missions in a communications role without launching the full DCS application. This paves the way for integration with popular third-party tools like LotATC, and makes it easier than ever to bring dedicated controllers and support personnel into your multiplayer sessions.

Good! This sort of integration needs to happen more. I know some third party developers have struggled over the years with systems that integrate into DCS and this maybe suggests a slightly more pragmatic approach to how integration should work.
