A year ago, IL-2 community member miloupdog started an IL-2 community server on Discord. A year later the community is going strong and continues to grow with the hopes of adding more players and enabling more teamwork.
Voice comms and more
Having voice communication available for flight sims is really useful for coordinating with your wingmates. The importance is frequently underestimated until you’ve actually experienced it.
A good microphone and a headset can make all the difference in your online play. Admittedly, I’m guilty of going in and being a lone wolf, but when I play as a team it’s always more fun.
What Discord does is offer up a pretty slick chat interface with voice communications as part of a suite of features. Share videos and links? No problem. Want to hop in a game and coordinate as a team, join a channel and start talking. It’s pretty simple, it’s really well put together and I’ve grown to like it more than TeamSpeak (sacrilege, I know) which has been an old standby for over a decade.
In talking to Milopugdog, administrator for the server, I’ve learned that there’s been quite a bit of growth. Back in July the community reached 100 users as its first major milestone. Grow has continued and in December the number of users had jumped to 400. As of February 2nd, the server now has 463 people and 3 bots to help manage some of the content.
Milo had this to say about how things are going:
I love the general tone of the server. Usually it’s just light banter about different historical things, or various aspects about the game. Although, when someone comes in with some questions, there’s always a few people who help them out.
He also had this to say:
Because of the general maturity level of the community, I’ve had to do no serious moderation, and have been able to focus more on further developing it into the general purpose server I’d like it to be.
This is great to hear and I think it’s a solid indicator that we have generally mature and helpful people who are present and indeed helping out.
If you’re just getting started with IL-2, consider jumping into Discord, with voice or text communications available and a helpful community ready to jump in.
Join the IL-2 community
Every time I log in there seems to be more posts and more people talking. As the IL-2 community grows and more players join in, Discord and the community built around it will continue to become ever more relevant.
Thinking about joining in? It’s pretty simple to join. Just follow this Discord link and you can connect: https://discord.gg/sbPMJNC
A web version of the client is available but I recommend checking out the software download.
EDIT: Expired Discord link fixed!
