Changes to the way that Steam does their account integration with third parties has required 1CGS to make a pretty hefty update for IL-2 so that Steam accounts can keep on working. In a patch released earlier today, 1CGS has now completed their update for Steam integration. For everyone flying this standalone without Steam, there’s also a few minor updates.
Your Steam and IL-2 accounts will now be linked
If you have purchased IL-2 through Steam, this patch is going to require an important account update on your part to make this all work as it should.
From the update notes today, this is probably the most important paragraph:
For those of you who like to play through Steam you will be happy about this change, but please understand that to be able to also purchase products on our site and fly using your unique IL-2 User Account nickname you will need to perform the linkage which is a one-time event. Once they are linked they are linked forever. Currently ALL Steam customers have separate Steam and IL-2 User accounts, but new Steam users will not automatically have an IL-2 User Account and must create one to link them. The process is short, but it involves a few steps and there are different paths you can follow.

Also some minor fixes were done in the game:
1. Phosphorous instruments and ventilation intake position corrected on Bf 109 G-14
2. Minor 3D model corrections for Bf 109s
3. Remaining issues with MP locks were addressed
4. Skip dialog for mission or campaign creators should be fixed now (but existing missions need to be edited to point to the new location of this tool: swf\extensions\skip)
The minor 3D model corrections appear to be extremely minor. Jason Williams reported:
Something with the windshield and an oil gauge. Small stuff.
So, no big changes in this patch but a meaningful update for Steam users that will help 1CGS continue to sell content through the Steam store. The alternative was not to use Steam anymore and of course that would have caused some big issues. For people PO’ed about the required changes, direct your displeasure at Valve’s change of policy around how third party accounts are managed.
Also, from all appearances this system does maintain integration between purchases made on Steam and those made on the IL-2 website. DCS’ integration is virtually non-existent and new DCS modules only slowly make an appearance on Steam sometimes months after release on their own store. So IL-2 fans have things pretty good here.
Patch 3.004 small, 3.005 may be bigger
Patch 3.004 was relatively small in size compared to some of the other patches we’ve seen. The Steam integration aside, the changes are minor here and we’re likely to see much more added in with a forthcoming patch.
The FW190A-8 has entered testing and the developers seem to be indicating that it will be arriving sooner than later. Assuming a two week testing period, we may see the FW190A-8 arrive within a few weeks.
