New Top Gun: Maverick trailer is out!

Next summer I’m going to be heading to the movie theatre to check out Top Gun: Maverick – the sequel to the revered 80s movie that helped make the F-14 (and Tom Cruise) a household name and synonymous with fighter jets. Now the sequel is in production with the latest trailer dropping earlier today. If you love fighter jets… I think you’re going to like this!

Watch it now!

We still don’t know very much about the plot of Top Gun: Maverick. We do know that Maverick has spent the last 30-years in the U.S. Navy, eschewing promotion, probably because he wants to keep flying fighter jets.

There’s lots of 1980s nostalgia here in this trailer but it also hints that the fundamental tension in the movie is around the dying breed that pilots are and the rise of drones. To be clear, I don’t think Top Gun: Maverick is trying to do something as heavy handed as Stealth but I guess we’ll just have to see.

Also, the F-14 does make it into this trailer right at the end. There were photos from the production showing an F-14 being placed on a carrier deck and it seems that we will see a F-14 flying in the movie – through the magic of cinema as no F-14s that still fly are accessible to the movie team.

Trailer screenshots and wrap-up

Here’s some stills from the trailer to highlight some interesting bits of the trailer. Who wants to go and recreate all of these with DCS: F/A-18C right now? I think we’ll be seeing a bunch of these kinds of shots very soon!

I think this looks like a fun action movie with just the right reverence placed on the nostalgia as well as enough new to separate it from the original. Of course that’s just the story that the trailer is telling us and we’ll have to wait for June 26th, 2020 to find out for ourselves.

If this trailer is a reasonable representation of the film then I’m quietly positive about it. Sure, I doubt it’ll win any Oscars but it seems to have a fair amount of nostalgia but without the 80’s cheesiness of the original. Likewise there seems to be lots of live action flying rather than the excessive cgi that’s usual these days, and what there is looks to be quality and not of the ILM type where aircraft fly like UFOs!

I was also surprised about the trailer. it could be another good movie with airplanes. At least I hope so, because Tom Cruise is a pilot himself. Let’s hope, I stay tuned 😀

Looks fun in a cheesy way – as it should.

Good a fighter as it might be, the SH still lacks the cache of the Tomcat.

The Tomcat cache comes mainly from the Top Gun movie. And don’t forget the Bug countered an alien invasion and killed Godzilla! But it is a modest plane and never brags about it.

I expect the F35C to appear in the movie as well. It seems the main reason for the one year delay was that the Navy wanted the Lightning on the movie, probably on the final fight.

Anyway if it is another good Tom Cruise action movie I’m more than fine with it. Loved Jack reacher, Loved oblivion, Loved MI… what is not to love about Top Gun 2?

It’s not just the movie. It was so the star of the Robotech/Transformers* cartoons (even if it wasn’t called that), which came out a few years before Top Gun, and likely was completely separate from it too.

There’s something about the F-14 that just looks cool. Maybe all the moving parts on it, and the whole lunatic design requirements, but it was not the movie that made the plane a star; they just were the first ones to star it in a movie.

One thing I noticed that’s missing from the trailer… Danger Zone! Hope they slip it in somewhere in the film.

Kenny Loggins is working on a rerecording of it. I’m guessing they will debut that with another trailer closer to release.

I’ve been very attached to Top Gun since the first year that I joined Air Cadets. I hope the plot for the sequel is pretty interesting.
