If you logged into IL-2: Great Battles during the day today you may have spotted another rocket in the hangar – this time with American markings to celebrate 50 years since Apollo 11 landed on the moon.

Apollo 50 years!

This rocket is symbolic of the 50 years since the Apollo 11 rocket launched and then landed on our closest celestial neighbor – the moon. Uttering the famous words, Neil Armstrong said:

One small step for [a] man, one giant leap for mankind

Neil Armstrong

This isn’t the first time that the IL-2 team has put something fun into their hangar. Previously the team has placed a similar rocket to mark Cosmonaut day and a Christmas tree was present for most of the month of December.

As I’ve said before, it’s always nice to have these little “Easter eggs” adding a celebration of momentous occasions in aviation history.

  1. It’s really a nice thing! These discreet gimmicks are a nice change and not too pushy

The first pilots were brave, but those early astronauts must have been even more so.

In the weird sim department, who had a look at “Reentry – an orbital simulator”? This includes the Mercury, Gemini and Apollo programs. It seems to require a lot more commitment than IL-2 or DCS though 😉

There’s even more hardcore, “Project Apollo – NASSP”.
