New cockpit image, academic videos coming soon for DCS: JF-17

A few new tidbits of information have come out about the DCS: JF-17 coming soon to DCS World by Deka Ironworks. This Pakistani-Chinese fighter jet has attracted a lot of attention in the DCS World community and we have a new image of the cockpit as well as information about forthcoming academic videos. This is the latest!

New image

This new image came to my attention via a post on r/Hoggit with the image supposedly being sourced by one of Deka Ironwork’s developers on a Chinese social media site.

The image shows part of the HUD, control panel and the triple MFD design of the jet’s cockpit. This nearly all-glass arrangement is becoming typical for most modern aircraft, both military and civilian, and so in a lot of ways the cockpit looks rather spartan.

Opinion seems muted on the look of the cockpit and that may be because this is not yet the final product. There may also be a good reason for that word is that the team’s cockpit texture artist has taken sick and has not yet finished work on bringing the cockpit towards being finished. If that is true or not, I don’t know. It’s also possible that this cockpit image is more about showing off the work on the data on the screens and that the eye candy is yet to come.

As it is, this image seems to have been sourced via one of the developers rather than being an official release from Deka Ironwork’s Facebook page. So, take it with a pinch of salt as they say.

Academic videos begin soon?

According to a post by LJQCN101 on the DCS World forums, Deka Ironworks will begin releasing their academic video series in only a matter of days:

If this turns out to be the case, this video will be part of a number of firsts for Deka Ironworks with this being their first DCS World module, one that is supposedly close to being content complete on release, and this would be their very first academic video.

Deka Ironworks tends to work away on their projects and say only very little. So, when the academic video series begins it will be interesting to see what they say and what they are focused on for this module.

I am cautiously optimistic that Deka Ironworks has something of a hit here with a very unique aircraft – if they can deliver at the level expected by developers these days. We’ll see just what happens in the coming days!

    I think what you commented is the main issue everyone has about this plane. Nobody knows what to expect from Deka.

    Sure their chinese assets are quite good, but those are AI after all. The J11 is just a cardboard copy of the Su27 with a bit of chinese flavour added (and fox 3 for that matter) and it is just a FC3 plane anyway.

    But now we are talking about a full fledged 4th gen fighter with systems, ordenance and avionics close to the Viper and the Hornet, both planes that are taking years to develop by the main DCS team and they are yet to be completed.

    And they say they are releasing it complete! With TGP, AG radar, long range anti radiation missiles, gliding bombs, cruise missiles, Jdams, LGB, AA missiles, data link… oh, and a PFM.

    I don’t know what to expect, even the F14B was released with a lot of fine tuning still needed and they still need to deliver the F14A, Forrestal and campaigns to the module.

    In my virtual squadron we have the “red guys” pretty excited about this plane, with a lot of them forfeiting the Viper purchase for the Thunder one, but I’m still curious to see in which state is delivered.

    I just hope we don’t have a severe case of “chinese bias” and we have an UFO like the russian planes on WarThunder.

      All great points! Deka is still something of an unproven developer so the JF-17 launch is going to provide an insight into what kind of level they are able to apply.

      I have some hope. It was a couple of years back that they showed off what their flight modeling abilities were like with examples of fly-by-write on and off with the JF-17. They also seem to have spent the last few years building up to this moment.

      We’ll see if it all pays off!

    I am cautiously optimistic. China has a history of producing cheap good, and while I suspect the JF-17 will have lots of teething issues if they can get through the first project then Deka will be in great shape to do other aircraft (and maybe some that are off limits to ED due to Russian Laws).

    Assuming that the finish this project we might get some nice high fidelity Red aircraft at last.

      That is the hope. There’s been more than a few rumours that Deka could tackle a high fidelity Chinese Flanker derivative. The may look like a Flanker on the outside but there’s a lot different with them – perhaps enough to make it feasible if the appropriate information is there.

      Could be interesting though I’m sure it will be years down the road.

    I find it hard to believe – given the Chinese (let alone Pakistani) issues with high-end systems – that the JF-17 should be that good when released.

    Relative systems performance in a sim I understand, but what is this company and who is paying the bills?
