Fans of Leatherneck Studio’s F4U-1D Corsair are going to be very excited as the team intends to debut the DCS: F4U-1D Corsair at the Virtual Festival of Aerobatic Teams (VFAT) coming up this weekend!
Get ready for the Corsair

Teasing the Corsair with black and white photos and several teasers over the last few months, it appears that Leatherneck intends to do a much more detailed overview of the module and they are doing it at the community’s biggest virtual airshow.
Here’s their statement:
Dear pilots,
Magnitude 3 – Leatherneck Simulations
It is with our greatest pleasure to announce our participation in the upcoming VFAT 2019 Virtual Airshow, where during the stream we will be showing for the very first time our fantastic Chance-Vought F4U-1D Corsair! Please join us for this event and for the interview with a few team members where we will be answering questions about the module!

According to the VFAT 2019 schedule, the display is scheduled for Saturday at 23:20 GMT or 6:20 pm EST or 3:20 PST.

Well they just showed it off landing on the USS Essex, and hinted that a Zero may be possible, I am now officially interested. It looked really nice.

An AI A6M and an empty Essex-class for c. $60 is going to become a little dull after the first week or so.

That is a potential problem for this. Especially if compatible parts of the Pacific theatre for DCS aren’t built out.

There was a suggestion of a water-focussed map, as I recall. Maybe good for Pacific?

Supposedly there’s a few maps in the works right now and maybe ED is planning to save those up for a end of year announcement/trailer as they have been doing the last few years.
One of the maps is supposedly suitable for both WWII and modern day and suitable for carrier ops. That one is also apparently the free map we haven’t heard much about recently.
Then there’s an Iwo Jima map that Magnitude 3/Leatherneck/Heatblur (before they split) were talking about doing. I don’t think we’ve seen anything of that since.

I think this is the real issue with flight sims of this generation. They just feel really empty compared to the ones I grew up with. Especially when it comes to building an emotional connection with the game world. They feel more like sandboxes than true games. Each new expansion is about new planes and new maps, with few improvements to core gameplay loops or mission briefings or campaign systems, wingman AI or comms. Which I’m sure many people enjoy – I just see a lot of missed opportunity. Even something as simple as an algorithmically generated highlight reel after I finish a mission in IL-2 would go a long way towards giving me more of a sense of accomplishment (the picture of a thousand rubles just isn’t doing it for me).
