IL-2 update 4.004 is out with Panther tank, Rhineland map updates, more!

After some quiet time, it seems that 1CGS is in no way slowing things down as patch 4.004 for the IL-2: Great Battles Series is out with another long list of tweaks and fixes plus a new tank, updates to the Rhineland map, and more!

4K textures, Panther tanks, map updates

New content in the patch includes all new 4K textures for the Yak-1 Series 69 for IL-2: Battle of Stalingrad, the new Pz.Kpfw. V Ausf.D “Panther” for Tank Crew, improved rivers, canals, and other water features for the Rhineland map, and 13 new airfields for the Rhineland map.

Those new bases include:

  • Le Culot East (Y-10)
  • Kluis (B-91)
  • Mill (B-89)
  • Helmond (B-86)
  • Amsterdam-Schiphol (B-97)
  • Arnhem-Deelen
  • Soesterberg
  • Strassfeld
  • Strassfeld 2 – Odendorf
  • Hilversum
  • Diest (B-64)
  • Nivelles (B-75)
  • Bierset–Liege (A-93)

Awesome!

Less stutters, improved spotting

Two key issues that the community has identified over the last few months (and much longer) are surrounding the issues of stutters in multiplayer and spotting of different aircraft against different types of backgrounds and textures. 1CGS has addressed issues on both of those fronts with this patch by implementing an updated texture cache, and by adjusting the brightness and size of distant aircraft levels of detail (or LODs).

There are also tweaks to various aircraft, AI updates and improvements, and one that I’ve been looking to see for a while – the correct season can now be spotted outside the hangar while preparing for a mission. Nice!

Wow!! Now that was fast! I didn’t expect the patch to come out that early. Kudos to the devs!

Glad to hear they fixed riverbed appearance on the Rheinland map. I hope they will also fix the look of some of the woods, which in the distance sometimes look very artificial, especially on flat ground and in winter.
